The Pitt has made a name for itself for it’s accurate depiction of the healthcare system and healthcare workers and The Pitt Season 2 is drawing attention to a very important trend in U.S. Healthcare, and is exploring it’s affect on medicine.
In the second season, one of the major plotlines is a clash that unfolds as Dr. Al-Hashimi, played by Sepideh Moafi is introduced, a doctor who is not afraid to let AI shoulder some of the workload. In one early episode, she tests an app that transcribes patient conversations to speed up documentation. It is helpful, mostly accurate, and very much imperfect and her solution is simple: Use it, but verify everything.
However, this idea classes with Noah Wyle’s Dr. Robbie, who has more of an old school mindset. To him, medicine is human and personal and letting algorithms into exam rooms feels risky and reckless. Their clash becomes one of the important parts of the sophomore season, sparking debates about the inclusion of high technology in medical spaces.
Creator R. Scott Gemmill spoke to Los Angeles Times about this detail in The Pitt Season 2 as he stated,
“Like any other tool, it has potential to be used wisely and potential for disaster. We’re not really exploring the disastrous side of it yet but just what the realities are. The fear is that it will make the doctors more efficient, especially with things like charting, but then will that time go back to the patients or will they just have to see more patients?”
This small plot line also mirrors the real world, where AI is increasingly being included in spaces that were once dominated by humans. It would certainly be interesting to see how this plotline develops in further episodes of The Pitt Season 2 and how the show chooses to portray the effect of AI on healthcare and human spaces.
