Second-placed Melbourne United found their rhythm in the fourth quarter to secure a much-needed victory over defending champions Illawarra Hawks at John Cain Arena
Melbourne United finally put an end to their frustrating losing streak on Thursday night, defeating the Illawarra Hawks at John Cain Arena in front of their home crowd. The second-placed team had endured four consecutive defeats, including two overtime heartbreakers, but managed to shake off their recent struggles with a convincing performance when it mattered most.
The matchup represented the third meeting of the season between last year’s grand finalists, adding extra significance to the contest. While United entered the game desperate for a win, they welcomed back star import Jesse Edwards after he missed time with an eye injury. However, 37-year-old veteran Chris Goulding remained absent due to illness, forcing the home side to adjust their rotation.
A promising start sets the tone
Melbourne came out firing from beyond the arc, converting their first two three-point attempts. The early success from the perimeter stood in stark contrast to their previous outing against Sydney Kings, where they managed just one three-pointer in 28 attempts. The improved shooting helped establish an early rhythm, while the team also showed better ball control by reducing the turnover issues that plagued them in their 86-92 loss to Sydney.

The Hawks struggled to find their footing in the opening period. Three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee managed just one basket and three rebounds during eight minutes of first-quarter action, and his visible frustration grew as he struggled to impact the game. Meanwhile, guard Tyler Harvey appeared to aggravate a lower back issue late in the first quarter, grimacing and pointing to the affected area multiple times throughout the contest.
Hawks battle to stay competitive
Illawarra’s shooting woes continued as they converted just three of 13 two-point attempts in the opening term. The second quarter started even worse for the defending champions, as Melbourne scored five quick points to extend their advantage. Head coach Justin Tatum called timeout within the first minute of the period after watching his team’s deficit balloon from four points to nine.

United pushed their lead to 15 points midway through the second quarter after connecting on their fifth three-pointer of the game. The margin appeared insurmountable until Todd Blanchfield sparked a remarkable comeback. The forward scored eight points across three consecutive possessions, single-handedly cutting the deficit to just four points and providing hope for the Hawks while causing concern among United supporters.
The game experienced an unusual 15-minute delay due to a shot clock malfunction, temporarily halting momentum for both teams. When play resumed, McGee began finding his rhythm in an entertaining battle with Edwards. United threatened to pull away again with a 13-point advantage, but Illawarra responded with an eight-point stretch. McGee elevated his play in the final minute of the half, capitalizing on a late turnover before swatting away an Edwards attempt to bring the deficit to five points heading into the break.
Third quarter concerns resurface
The Hawks shot an impressive 58 percent during the third quarter, keeping pace with their hosts and refusing to let the game slip away. However, Illawarra’s lack of discipline proved costly as United capitalized at the free-throw line, converting all 22 of their attempts from the stripe with perfect accuracy.
For United, simply staying competitive in the third quarter represented progress. The team had lost six consecutive third quarters entering Thursday’s game, including a devastating collapse against Sydney that contributed to their losing streak. Maintaining their advantage through the period provided a psychological boost heading into the final frame.

The quarter also brought unfortunate injury news for Melbourne. Shea Ili, who had already dealt with two separate hamstring injuries this season, pulled up during a fast break and immediately left the court. Team officials later confirmed he had suffered his third hamstring strain of the year, creating additional roster concerns for the busy holiday schedule ahead.
Fourth quarter dominance seals victory
Melbourne opened the final period with renewed energy and focus. Dash Daniels, celebrating his 18th birthday, broke a four-possession scoring drought by converting an uncontested three-pointer that pushed the margin back into double digits. From that moment forward, United never looked back, applying intense defensive pressure on an increasingly deflated Hawks squad.
The home side’s defensive intensity proved too much for Illawarra to overcome. The Hawks, who entered the game as the competition’s worst perimeter defensive team, surrendered 11 three-pointers while struggling to generate consistent offense of their own. McGee finished with a respectable 18 points and 10 rebounds, adding to the 65 points and 26 rebounds he accumulated across previous meetings with Melbourne this season, but couldn’t provide the game-changing impact his team desperately needed.
Looking ahead to challenging schedule
United head coach Dean Vickerman will hope this victory marks a turning point for his squad. Last season, Melbourne experienced a similar four-game losing streak before finishing the regular season with an impressive 7-2 record. However, the upcoming holiday period presents significant challenges, particularly with Ili now sidelined and Goulding’s status uncertain for Tuesday’s outdoor game against Tasmania JackJumpers.
For Illawarra, the loss leaves them two wins outside the top six playoff positions, adding urgency to their remaining schedule as they attempt to defend their championship.
