BLK’s head of brand shares 2026 dating trends showing intentional connections and values-first approaches reshaping Gen Z dating
Amber Cooper has a front-row seat to one of the most fascinating cultural shifts in modern romance. As head of brand at BLK, the largest dating app for Black singles in America, she watches millions of users navigate love and connection in real time. After spending over three and a half years at the company, Cooper has noticed something striking about Gen Z daters. They are not playing games. They are asking hard questions upfront, walking away from confusion without guilt and demanding emotional receipts before giving second chances. Cooper recently released BLK’s 2026 dating trends report, revealing a generation that has fundamentally changed the rules of attraction.
How did you become head of brand at BLK?
I’ve been part of BLK a little over three and a half years. Prior to that, I’ve always been in marketing with startups. I love tech, I love how innovative it is, I love working with people and connecting people. When I joined BLK, it was such a beautiful space to step into. It’s an app really made for people like us. Hearing the success stories, meeting people in real life, seeing people finding their person or finding community and friends. People who are like-minded and don’t have to explain themselves. They show up authentically all the time. It’s been a lovely journey here at BLK, and I’m excited for 2026.
What was the most shocking finding in the 2026 report?
Learning how intentional Gen Z is with their dating approach really shocked me with this data. Gen Z grew up in a world that’s really content focused and about how you look from the outside. But they’re very intentional with their dating, and they lead with that in all their ways of connecting.
If you described 2026 Gen Z dating in one sentence, what’s their vibe?
They are intentional, they are rooted, they are very genuine. They really care about their journey. They lead with their journey, and if they’re not feeling something, it’s okay. They have no problem leaving what’s not for them, compared to other generations who may have stayed around a little bit longer than they should have in certain situations.
Why is pre-qualifying huge this year with faith, politics, money habits and timelines?
They’ve made clarity their new form of chemistry. If you can ask those clarifying questions upfront, whether it’s the first phone call, text thread, FaceTime or first meetup, you get all of those clarifying questions out. What’s for them, they will stay with, and if it’s not, they are okay leaving it behind. Clarity is the new chemistry with Gen Z. They don’t like to wait around, they don’t like to second guess things. They try not to be overthinkers, so they just get it out the way.
Is this values-first approach making people more selective or more open?
It’s making them more selective, and people can argue it’s making their pool smaller, which is okay. You are finding people who are truly for you. Like we say at BLK, you come and you don’t have to explain as much as you do on other apps. If your pool is smaller, your pool is filled with people who are more for you. It’s a positive thing here on BLK.
What is community cuffing and how does trust work for Black Gen Z today?
We love community cuffing over here at BLK. There’s so many interest groups just within our community. Our users express that they do find people through shared interests. If you’re interested in fitness, run clubs are the hype. If you’re interested in music, festivals. If you’re a foodie, the brunch scene across all these major cities is growing like crazy. You’re bound to meet people who like the same things you do, who think the same way, who have similar interests. Our community loves community cuffing. When we saw that being one of our highest trends, it aligned with what we see and what we do on the brand side in real life here at BLK.
Why is Gen Z insisting on accountability instead of letting bad behavior slide?
Accountability and clarity. Ghost lighting is when someone disappears but they don’t really give you a reason why. It could be they were going through a rough time or needed to navigate something, but they don’t communicate that. Yet they still come back and treat you like you were the one that dropped them. It causes confusion. It ties back into return on emotion. If you are causing confusion, are you really for me? The ghost lighting trend is come correct or don’t come back at all. If you did have to step away for a certain reason, that’s okay. We’re humans, we all go through stuff. But if you can’t communicate that, and you’re going to come back and make it seem like the other person left you, that trend is not acceptable.
What is resurrection and coming back with receipts?
That is when two people are talking and the situationship, relationship or friendship had to end because one person had to do work on their end to be worthy of that other person’s time. Let’s say they circle back six months later and showed they did growth, whether it was therapy, working on themselves, their mental or physical well-being. They’re showing that through being consistent, following up and communicating thoroughly. A lot of our users said they would give that person another chance if they really showed they put in the work. Gen Z doesn’t like talk, they like action. So you can resurrect yourself and get back in the good graces again.
What is faith fishing and why does it matter?
Faith is a big part of the Black community in general. Sometimes our users shared that people will pretend to dive deeper in their faith if they meet someone who is really involved in their faith. We call that faith fishing because you’re interested in it, but it wasn’t a big part of your life. But you did meet someone and it is a big part of their life, so you will go faith fishing so you can be aligned with them better. A lot of people said that’s another compatibility signal within their dating journey.
How are political and social values shaping long-term compatibility?
Shared convictions are really becoming a shared direction within the Gen Z community specifically. They see that as essentially long-term compatibility. If you meet someone and they’re not big into committing to change, doing their part, whether that’s voting or educating themselves on issues at hand, they see that as a long-term sign for compatibility. That’s been really cool to see because we do have a really engaged Gen Z audience.
How does BLK think about curating compatibility beyond the profile?
We see that as a warm-up to the first date. If you can check someone’s playlist and you know you like the same artist, you can probably drop a lyric and you know that person’s going to get it. We like to call that intel. It’s nice to come prepared. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. You don’t have to be as surprised. It’s important to know, do you have the same interests as that person? A profile can describe yourself very well on BLK. However, there’s always deeper stuff that you can find.
Why do lifestyle signals through mood boarding matter so much before the first date?
That’s deeper intel. If you love to travel and that person has no signs that they have ever traveled, let alone have a passport, their mood board might look different than yours. If you’re interested in design, art and detail, and someone’s mood board is completely different, there might be some friction. It might take longer to establish that connection because that person will have to learn a different mood board, just like the other person will have to learn theirs. It’s definitely an indicator of alignment with lifestyle and overall interests outside of dating.
Which communication trend do you believe will last well into the next decade?
I think mood boarding will. As people go through their journey, they are truly understanding who they are, what they want their life to look like, what their interests are, what fills their cup. As people become more secure in that within themselves, they also seek that in other people, romantically and platonically. I think mood boarding will be a really big and growing trend in 2026 and beyond.
If you could correct one misconception about Black Gen Z daters, what would it be?
Gen Z is seen as a very carefree, careless generation, but the data shows they are very intentional. They have a great head on their shoulders, they are learning what they want, and they’re not settling for anything less. That’s maybe why that generation might seem a little rebellious compared to other generations, but it all falls under just being intentional, romantically, platonically and in any other aspect in their life.
If you could give Black singles one piece of advice for 2026 based on the data, what would it be?
This is going to sound cliche, but I would say truly be yourself and love being yourself. There is someone for everyone on BLK, and truly just show up as yourself. Don’t fake it on your profile. They’ll find out in real life anyways. Truly love showing up as your authentic self on the app, and you’ll meet your person. The journey is unique to everyone. There is no right or wrong journey or way to go about connecting, meeting or dating. Not only just be yourself in 2026, but love being yourself.
How can people find BLK and ensure success on the app?
You can find BLK in your Apple and Google stores. You can follow us @meet_blk on Instagram and @meetblk on TikTok. We put out a lot of fun content. When you are building your BLK profile, really show up as yourself. Choose photos that show how you are in everyday life and what you’re interested in. If you like to travel, post a photo of you by the Eiffel Tower in Paris or wherever. Be really honest with yourself.
When you are selecting people to match with, be very intentional. Gen Z is very intentional. Do you like what you saw on someone’s profile? Do their prompts resonate with you? Did their pictures intrigue you? If they have a profile sticker, do you align with what they identify with? It’s okay to take a few seconds, a few minutes and really analyze a profile to see if you align with any of these trends. It makes for a better experience. BLK welcomes everyone. Whatever generation you are in, show up. There’s a space for you here at BLK.
