Stephen A. Smith steps into the drama, and fans are not having it
In a year already overflowing with celebrity dust-ups, few expected Stephen A. Smith to wade into the latest swirl of tension involving Ray J, Brandy and Beyoncé. But the longtime ESPN analyst — never one to shy away from a viral moment — did just that, and fans quickly let him know they were tired of his commentary crossing outside the sports world.
The situation began in early December 2025, when Ray J posted a now-viral Instagram video accusing Beyoncé and Jay-Z of repeatedly ignoring his sister Brandy backstage at several stops on the Boy Is Mine tour. His frustration was unmistakable.
“N—s need to pull up when they come to the show. Come say what’s up to Brandy too, Jay-Z and Beyoncé,” Smith said. He went on to explain that his family are “big fans” of the Carters, adding, “For y’all to come to every one of Brandy and Monica’s shows and never say what’s up to B… I don’t like it.”
According to Ray J, it would cost the superstar couple nothing to “just walk by Brandy’s room and say, ‘What’s up, B? Have a good show.’”
Enter Stephen A. Smith
Days later, Smith sat down with The Shade Room for a livestream conversation covering his career, current events, and trending pop-culture topics. When Ray J’s video came up, Smith did not mince words.
“What you caught up in your feelings for to the point where you have to broadcast it to the world?” he asked, shaking his head. “Why? There are worse things to happen to us than not have pictures taken with somebody.”
Smith doubled down, criticizing Ray J for oversharing. “Why does everybody have to know everything?”
Smith’s comments hit social media like a match to dry brush — and the response was immediate.
Fans clap back
Plenty of fans felt Smith overstepped, injecting himself into celebrity drama that had nothing to do with him.
“Sometimes I wish he’d keep his opinions as far back as [his] hairline,” one user quipped. Another wrote, “This has nothing to do with sports … this has nothing to do with you, Stephen.”
A third fan dismissed the feud as exaggerated from the start: “Y’all are really making a thing out of this. Beyoncé went to support her sister and her childhood friend and it’s been manufactured beef for a week now.”
If Ray J was bothered by the backlash — or by Smith’s accessory pile-on — his sister didn’t show it.
Brandy and Monica brush it off
Onstage during a recent show, Monica joked that she solved the whole problem:
“I took Ray J’s phone away after that post,” she told the laughing crowd.
She then made sure to uplift him, adding, “Y’all make some noise for Ray J. He’s not just Brandy’s brother — he’s my brother too.”
A chaotic holiday for Ray J
The viral controversy arrived during an already turbulent season for Ray J. Just weeks earlier, he was arrested on Thanksgiving after allegedly pulling a gun during an argument with his ex-wife, Princess Love. He was taken to a Los Angeles-area jail, charged with making a criminal threat, and later released after posting a $50,000 bond.
Princess later issued a public statement addressing Ray J directly. “You’re more than a drunk,” she wrote, urging him to take his mental health seriously.
A drama with no clear end
As 2025 winds to a close, the Ray J/Brandy/Beyoncé incident continues to ripple through social media, with Smith now pulled into the fray whether he meant to be or not. For some fans, it’s another reminder that celebrity drama rarely needs extra commentary — especially from someone already known for stirring the pot.
