The rising star reflects on stepping into a legendary role, shaping Black storytelling, and building a career on his own terms
Jabari Banks has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most promising young leading men, taking on the iconic role once played by Will Smith in the reimagined Bel-Air. With the series closing its fourth and final season, Banks reflects on the cultural significance of the show, the challenges of stepping into such a legendary role, and how he maintains balance in a demanding industry.
In an exclusive interview with rolling out, Banks discussed his career, creative passions, and vision for the future.
You’ve helped create history by redefining a classic for a new generation. How has being part of such a cultural moment changed how you see yourself, your career, and the impact of your work?
It’s a big start to my career. Moving forward, I think about how I can continue elevating my artistry, the stories I tell, and the way I show up for those stories. My goal is to join projects that are meaningful and culturally relevant.
Both you and Will Smith now hold a place in history as the faces of two generations of Bel-Air. What does that legacy mean to you?
It’s an honor. Will Smith was and is one of my favorite actors, so following in his footsteps means a lot. It was definitely big shoes to fill. My focus was on making the role my own. The show has taken on a life of its own, and I’m glad people embraced it in a similar way to the original.

How do you hope the final season leaves its mark as a cultural document of Black storytelling?
I hope the next generation is inspired to continue telling stories, even if they are familiar stories, in ways we haven’t seen before. How can we peel back layers, dive deeper, and give young creators the freedom to do the same?
Tell us more about yourself. Favorite sport, favorite places to travel, cities that feel like home?
I love Hawaii; I’ll probably live there one day. My favorite sport is basketball. Music-wise, I’m listening to a lot of Cleo Soul; she’s super-talented.
How do you stay fit and maintain wellness in Hollywood?
My routine varies. I do hot yoga, gym, and walk the Hollywood Reservoir almost daily. I focus on consciously preparing myself for roles and the future. For mental health, I stay close to family and friends, practice spirituality, and use therapy when I can.

How do you navigate the temptations of Hollywood while protecting your purpose and peace?
It’s a daily journey. Every day is a new opportunity to do something wrong. I try to stand by what I decide in the morning. That discipline has been my biggest way of navigating the world. I find reasons and put myself in situations to avoid temptation. It’s a skill I continue to refine.
How do you enjoy life outside of filming?
I love making music. I released a project called Ultra in September. I also enjoy visiting museums and exploring creative spaces.
What are your thoughts on AI artists in the industry?
I’m not against AI, but it should respect the art and complement artists. Acting with an AI is challenging unless it’s something like CGI. Music is a different conversation, but I’m open to exploring it thoughtfully.

What have you learned about financial wellness and planning for longevity in Hollywood?
Save and invest. There’s always a reason to spend, but putting money aside is critical. Having a trusted business manager has helped me understand the importance of financial literacy.
Can you give us a quick Will Smith impression?
Will Smith speaks slowly and intentionally, making every word feel important. That’s what I try to capture.
Where can fans follow you and what’s next?
You can find me on all platforms. @JabariBanx on Twitter. I’m excited for 2026 with new music and acting projects coming out.
