As per recent article by US Weekly, tennis star Serena Williams has announced that she will no compete in Wimbledon 2026 in doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams.
Serena took to Instagram on July 4, Saturday and made the announcement alongside a video of her walking tenderly with her fully-bandaged right leg.
“I am heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete,” wrote Serena on her Instagram page
“I’m especially grateful to tournament director, Jamie Baker, and the entire tournament team for giving me every opportunity to play here. Thank you to the fans for your incredible support and for making this comeback so meaningful…All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you…” continued the tennis player.
Serena Williams returns to tennis in June
In June, Serena came out of retirement to play tennis again, partnering with Victoria Mboko against Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in a doubles match (Mboko, 19, suffered an injury that forced the pair to quit).
In a June 1 statement to The Athletic, Serena Williams said, “Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter. I’m thrilled to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages, and grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments in my career.”
Alongside Karolina Muchova, Serena Williams participated in the Berlin Open in the eagerly awaited run-up to Wimbledon. (In the end, Guiliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe defeated the combination 6-4, 6-4.)
Then, Serena made her Wimbledon comeback against Maya Joint in her first singles match in almost four years. Late in the opening set of the eagerly anticipated match, Serena tweaked her knee. (In the end, Joint prevailed 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.)
After the loss in the first round, she wrote on Instagram: “It fels so good to be back on the grass at @wimbledon. “So thankful for the wild card — which I am more grateful that my daughters got to see because it is never too late to chase something you love.”
Serena Williams also posted a video of the athlete walking on her right knee, pictures of medical syringes filled with fluid obtained from her knee, and images that appeared to show a small portion of her rehabilitation process.
