HBCU Love: How Norfolk State Helped Shape a Lasting Romance for Alexis Martin and Jeremy Jones

A Love Story Rooted in Shared Values

In a world where dating apps, busy schedules and modern cynicism often dominate conversations about relationships, Alexis Martin and Jeremy Jones offer a refreshing reminder that enduring love still finds a way. Their story is rooted in shared values, mutual respect and the lasting bonds created through the HBCU experience.

The couple, who will exchange vows on July 11 at the Norfolk Hilton, didn’t actually meet while attending Norfolk State University. Instead, fate waited until after graduation, bringing them together at a fraternity cookout hosted by one of Jeremy’s fraternity brothers.

A Memorable First Impression

But Jeremy had already noticed Alexis years before.

When a mutual friend introduced them, Jeremy surprised Alexis by reciting her résumé almost from memory. He knew she had been a member of the Spartan Legion Band’s Silk flag team, was a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. member, and had made her mark around Norfolk State.

“I already know who Alexis is,” Jeremy recalled with a laugh. “She was like, ‘How do you know me?’”

Rather than finding it strange, Alexis admitted she was impressed.

“I’d never had anybody do that before,” she said. “Everything he said was absolutely true.”

That memorable introduction led to exchanged Instagram handles, followed by a first date where the real connection began. As they talked, they discovered what felt like an endless list of shared experiences. Both were Mass Communications majors. Both marched with the legendary Spartan Legion Band. Both embraced the leadership opportunities offered through Greek life. And both credited Norfolk State with shaping the people they had become.

“It was no going back after that,” Alexis said.

Discovering They Were Meant for Each Other

For Jeremy, Alexis stood out long before they officially met. While he admired her beauty, especially her striking hazel eyes, it was her character that ultimately convinced him she was different.

“She’s deeply rooted in her faith,” he said. “She’s giving, she’s kind, and everybody who knows her says she has a wonderful spirit.”

Alexis found the same authenticity in Jeremy. One moment, in particular, made her realize he was someone worth building a future with.

As she prepared for a major work event late one evening, Jeremy simply asked if she needed help. Without hesitation, he showed up and spent the evening helping her finish preparations.

“It wasn’t difficult,” Alexis said of their relationship. “It wasn’t forced. We didn’t have to always be doing something exciting. I realized I could simply enjoy being with him.”

The HBCU Connection That Changed Everything

Their love story is also a testament to the lasting influence of HBCUs. Both believe Norfolk State University did more than educate them — it cultivated leadership, service and purpose.

Alexis, a Norfolk native, initially planned to attend college elsewhere before receiving an academic scholarship package that made Norfolk State impossible to ignore. There, she joined Delta Sigma Theta after being inspired by women who embodied scholarship, leadership and service. In a surprising twist, she later learned her mother was also a Delta, a legacy she had never mentioned until Alexis decided to pursue membership herself.

Jeremy’s journey was similarly transformative. A Virginia native and talented saxophonist, he earned a scholarship to join the Spartan Legion Band, eventually serving as head drum major. His Norfolk State experience reinforced his passion for leadership, service and community — qualities that later led him to become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Looking back, both agree that their shared HBCU and Divine Nine foundation laid the groundwork for a successful relationship.

“I don’t think I’d be the person I am today without Norfolk State,” Jeremy said. “The university helped shape who we became, and that’s why we fit so well together.”

A Wedding Surrounded by Family and Fellow Spartans

When the couple says “I do” on July 11, they’ll be surrounded by family, lifelong friends and countless fellow Spartans who have been part of their journey. Their celebration at the Norfolk Hilton is expected to feel like a Norfolk State reunion, with classmates, fraternity brothers, sorority sisters and loved ones all coming together to witness the next chapter of their story.

What started with a chance encounter at a cookout has grown into a partnership built on faith, friendship, service and love—a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best relationships begin long before two people realize they’re meant for each other.
