The Rookie Season 9 was confirmed in April 2026, and fans are eagerly waiting to see what the next season will entail after Season 8 ended with a massive cliffhanger. When it looked like Tim and Lucy might have finally had the happiest moment of their lives as they were getting engaged, Heath Everett’s operatives drugged and kidnapped the couple.
The episode ended with no answers about what happened to Tim and Lucy or what the next season will bring for the other characters. TVinsider’s BTS conversation with The Rookie’s cast has revealed a few things we can expect from Season 9.
The Rookie Season 9 BTS conversation reveals what the cast wants for their characters
The Rookie Season 9 has a lot to unpack, and fans would really appreciate it if the first thing on the agenda were revealing what happened to Tim and Lucy. After going through multiple hardships, the couple finally got engaged, but their happiness was short-lived, as immediately after, they got kidnapped.
Speaking to TVinsider, when asked about where he thinks Tim is headed in The Rookie Season 9, Eric Winter, who plays Tim, said,
“I do feel there’s a world in which they should show up in separate locations. I don’t think they should be kidnapped in the same place. I think that’ll increase the stakes. It will be incredibly dramatic. What happened to each person? How do l get out? Whereas if we’re together, then they’re gonna be there’s gonna be teamwork. Obviously, people are going to come in and help us out. Hopefully, Tim doesn’t die. I don’t know.”
Thus, in The Rookie Season 9, we might see them in captivity in different locations so that they are unable to help each other. If that happens, we’ll also see them worry about each other and try to find a way not only out of captivity but also to each other. Melissa O’Neil, who plays Lucy, spoke about her character’s journey in The Rookie Season 9, saying,
“So, I really hope l wake up and that I remember that I have skills, that l remember I have a fiance. Who knows? Maybe she forgets.”
While O’Neil hasn’t confirmed anything, her tone suggests that Lucy might just lose her memory and not remember who she is, what she does, or that she is engaged to Tim. That would add more conflict in both her and Tim’s storylines. While fans are hoping for some peaceful days ahead for the couple, The Rookie Season 9 might have more challenges coming their way.
Speaking about how the wedding would go, Eric Winter said that he thinks Tim is the kind of person who would like to elope and have an intimate wedding, but there might be a big celebration too. O’Neil has also expressed that Lucy would want the wedding to be quiet, peaceful, and, more importantly, safe so that no one gets hurt.
Speaking about Tim’s overall storyline in The Rookie Season 9, Winter stated that he hopes to see more of Tim’s mother, Joy, and sister, Genny, since that will help the audience understand Tim better. Winter also expressed that he would like to see Tim go undercover. Since Lucy is known for her work as an undercover officer, perhaps we will see her and Tim go undercover together in The Rookie Season 9.
Speaking to TVinsider, Lisseth Chavez, who plays Celina Juarez, said that she’d like to see Celina go undercover in Season 9. If the wishes of the cast come true, we might just see multiple undercover operations in the upcoming season.
Mekia Cox, who plays Nyla Harper in the show, was asked how her character is dealing with the fact that Glasser is still out there. Cox’s response was that after going through all the litigation and getting demoted temporarily, all Nyla wants going into The Rookie Season 9 is to see Glasser behind bars, preferably forever. Since O’Neil, Chavez, and Cox were all together when asked the questions, they all said that they hope to do more group scenes in The Rookie Season 9.
In Season 8, Wesley Evers and Sean Del Monte started a new law firm called Evers & Del Monte. Wesley is no longer a prosecutor and has gone back to being a defence attorney. It was Wesley’s job as a defence attorney that gave him an enemies-to-lovers trope with his now-wife, Angela Lopez.
Shawn Ashmore, who plays Wesley, said he is curious to see how Wesley will clash with the LAPD now that he is a defence attorney again. He also believes Wesley and Angela will have some conflicts in The Rookie Season 9, though he hopes they won’t be anything too serious. Ashmore also revealed that he hopes to see Angela more in combat. Thus, we might see more of Angela in action in Season 9 and not just work cases as a detective.
Deric Augustine, who plays Miles Penn, told TVinsider that he hopes to see Miles finish his rookie year with Tim as his training officer (TO), just as he started it. Augustine also hopes that his character learns from his mistakes and remembers what his TOs have taught him as he’s starting his journey as a P2.
For The Rookie Season 9, we can thus expect a few undercover operations, Time and Lucy finding a way back to each other, and their (hopefully) peaceful wedding. We can expect to see Nyla working hard to put Glasser behind bars, Miles’s new journey as a P2, and Wesley adjusting to life as a defence attorney.
The Rookie Season 9 will premiere on ABC in early 2027.
