Philadelphia faces extreme heat, storm threat Today

Philadelphia is enduring another day of extreme heat on the Fourth of July, with temperatures expected to push above 100 degrees for the third consecutive day. An Extreme Heat Warning issued earlier in the week by the National Weather Service remains in effect until the end of the day, covering Philadelphia County and dozens of surrounding counties across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Forecasters say daytime temperatures will climb from the 90s into the low 100s, with humidity making conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature. By midday, the heat index is expected to feel hotter than 100 degrees, and by mid-afternoon that number could climb as high as 108 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Storms threaten evening plans

The mugginess fueling the heat wave is also expected to spark a round of storms later today. Forecasters say the best chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms will arrive between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., right as many outdoor Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks displays are set to get underway.

The National Weather Service has warned that some of these storms could turn severe, with the potential for damaging wind gusts between 60 and 80 mph and localized flash flooding. Philadelphia and the surrounding region are considered at an enhanced risk for these more dangerous storm conditions, meaning outdoor events and fireworks shows could face last minute disruptions depending on how the evening unfolds.

A pattern shift finally on the way

Relief from the heat is on the horizon, though it won’t arrive immediately. Sunday is expected to remain steamy, with highs only reaching the low 90s and a continued chance of evening showers. The more significant change comes Monday, when forecasters expect a sharp cooldown, with highs potentially staying below 80 degrees for the first time in several days.

That cooler stretch will come with its own weather to track, as rain is expected to accompany the lower temperatures Monday and into Tuesday. Sunshine and warmer conditions are expected to return by the middle of the week, though some forecasts suggest the region could be looking at the possibility of another heat wave developing shortly after.

A stretch that’s tested the region

This holiday weekend’s heat has been part of a broader pattern that has strained the Philadelphia area for days, with the extreme warning remaining in place continuously since earlier in the week. Combined with the added risk of severe weather moving through during peak evening hours, Today is shaping up as one of the more complicated Fourth of July forecasts the region has seen in recent memory, with both the heat and the storm threat requiring close attention through the end of the night.
