Costco is closed July 4 but these stores are open

Costco and Heinen’s shut their doors while Walmart, Target and Publix stay open today

If you forgot the ice, the sunscreen or the burger buns, most stores have you covered today. The Fourth of July is a federal holiday, which means banks, post offices and government buildings are dark, but the majority of grocery stores and big box retailers will keep their doors open for last minute shoppers. One warehouse giant, however, will not be among them.

Costco leads the list of closures

Costco is closed today. Independence Day is one of seven holidays the warehouse club observes each year, alongside New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In the Chicago area, grocer Heinen’s is also closed at all locations, including its stores in Naperville, Lake Bluff, Glenview, Barrington and Bannockburn.

Government services are shut down too. There is no US mail delivery, and post offices are closed for retail transactions, with services resuming at usual times afterward. Priority Mail Express still runs 365 days a year. UPS and FedEx have suspended pickup and delivery, though UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical remain available around the clock. Store locations for both carriers may be closed or on modified hours.

Most banks are closed, since the Federal Reserve observes the holiday. Online banking and ATMs still work, but deposits made today may not post until the next business day, and automated bill payments may be delayed. In Alabama, state run ABC liquor stores are also closed, though beer and wine remain available at licensed grocery and convenience stores where counties permit sales.

The stores open on July 4

Walmart closes only on Thanksgiving and Christmas, so stores run regular hours today, typically 6 AM to 11 PM. Target operates normal business hours of roughly 8 AM to 10 PM, though pharmacy hours vary. Sam’s Club is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, and BJ’s Wholesale Club runs 10 AM to 7 PM.

Grocery shoppers have plenty of options. Publix, which closes for only three holidays a year, is open with most stores running 7 AM to 10 PM, though its pharmacies are closed. Kroger, Sprouts and Winn Dixie operate regular hours, while Whole Foods closes early at 6 PM and Trader Joe’s shuts at 5 PM. Aldi runs limited hours, with many locations opening around 8:30 or 9 AM and closing by 8:30 PM. Lowe’s opens at its usual time but closes early, and Starbucks hours vary by location.

The consistent advice from every retailer is the same. Holiday hours differ store to store, so check your local location before heading out for that final cookout run.
