Decades-old allegations have put Gary Glitter back in court spotlight

Gary Glitter, the former UK pop star, has been charged with historical s**ual offences dating back to 1978.

According to the CPS, the 82-year-old whose real name is Paul Gadd has been charged with one count of unlawful se***al interc**rse with a girl under 13. Additionally, he has also been charged with three counts of indecent as**ult on a girl under 14 years.

There is currently one alleged victim, and the offences occurred between 1978 and 1981 at a residential property in Kensington. The Metropolitan Police added that the victim is currently under the protection of specialist officers and has been made aware of the update.

According to the BBC, the allegations were apparently reported to the Met on January 9 last year. Following the allegations, an investigation was launched, and the former glam rock singer was interviewed on July 22, 2025.

Bethan David, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor in CPS London, revealed that they have worked closely with the Metropolitan Police as they have carried out the initial investigation. She assured,

“Our prosecutors have worked together establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to do so” (via BBC)

She added,

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that proceedings are now active, and the defendant has the right to fair trial”(via Sky News)

Gary Glitter, aka Paul Gadd, is currently being held in Devon’s HM Prison Channings Wood. He is set to appear at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London on August 5, 2026.

The former pop star was previously convicted and jailed for child s** crimes. He was convicted of s**ually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. He had to serve a 16-year prison sentence, which was imposed in 2015 by Judge Alistair McCreath. He was released on licence in 2023 after serving half his sentence, but was later called back to prison for breaching the conditions of the licence. He was apparently enquiring about how to access the dark web.

He was first jailed in 1999 for the possession of ch*ld p******aphy. In November 1997, Gary Glitter was arrested after a technician found d**”*rbing images of children on the hard drive of a laptop he took to a computer retailer in Bristol for repair. Upon investigation, the police found further images from his homes in London and Wedmore.

At the Bristol Court on November 12, 1999, he was sentenced to four months in prison and was placed on the s*x offender register after he admitted downloading more than 4000 ch*** p******aphy items.

Following his release in January 2000, he decided to leave the UK and move to Spain, then to Cuba, and then to Cambodia. In 2002, he was detained for previous s*x offences and got bail after spending a couple of days in jail. In January 2003, he was deported again, before finally settling in Vietnam.

In 2006, a Vietnamese court convicted him of doing obs**** acts with two minor girls, aged 10 and 11. He was sentenced to almost four years in jail. The sentence also includes mandatory deportation and a payment of five million Vietnamese dong to the victims’ families. Upon his release, he returned to Britain.
