What happened during the Lane Bryant murders?
The attack (aslo known as Lane Bryant murders) happened in the morning of February 2, 2008, when a man who looked like a delivery rider stepped into the Lane Bryant clothing store in Tinley Park. Once inside, he pulled out a firearm and took control of six women, including two store employees and four customers.
He took them into a back room so that they could not escape, and investigators later determined that at least one of the women was sexually assaulted before the shooting took place. The killer used a .40 caliber Glock handgun to shoot each of the six women in the head.
Five of them lost their lives: store manager Rhoda McFarland, Connie Woolfolk, Sarah Szafranski, Carrie Hudek Chiuso, and Jennifer Bishop. The only survivor, a 33-year-old sales associate was shot in the neck but remained alive.
She realized that the attacker belived she’s dead, so she remained motionless. And once the man went outside, she called for help and alerted the alert emergency responders.
Officers reached the crime scene in a few minutes, but the killer had already fled. Initially, the Lane Bryant murders incident was claimed to be a robbery, but nvestigators questioned that theory because very little, if anything, had been taken from the store or the victims. Despite an extensive investigation, authorities have never been able to identify or arrest the person responsible for the Lane Bryant murders. The sixth woman who survived played a vital role in the early stages of the case by working with investigators to create composite sketches of the gunman.
According to her, the killer was a Black man in his late 20s or early 30s, standing between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a medium build and cornrowed hair. There have been thousands of tips, but none of them helped in identifying this man.
Detectives also recovered DNA evidence believed to have been left by the attacker and have re-examined it multiple times as forensic technology has improved. However, those efforts have not produced a match that could solve the case.
The .40 caliber Glock handgun used in the killings has never been recovered. Authorities have not publicly identified any fingerprints or other forensic evidence that conclusively links a specific individual to the crime.
Investigators have explored several motives over the years, but the real reason remains a mystery. The search continues to be led by the Tinley Park Police Department, the South Suburban Major Crime Task Force, and the Illinois State Police.

18 years have passed, and yet there’s no direct clue that can lead investigators to the killer. As explained before, there have been tips submitted by the public and the police are still following them, but there hasn’t been any major breakthrough in the Lane Bryant murders case.
The victims’ families have also continued to push for answers. One of the victims, Connie Woolfolk’s father, Melvin Woolfolk, says that despite the passage of time, he and his wife, Annette Woolfolk, are still searching for answers about who was responsible for their daughter’s death.
Their main hope is that the person behind the attack will eventually be identified and brought to justice. Investigators also remain optimistic about advances in forensic science, particularly genetic genealogy, which has helped solve several cold cases in recent years.
