Interestingly, Fool Night anime series is a collaboration between Sunrise Studio and SHAFT. It is the first time these studios are working together to bring this series to reality. The expectations are going to be high because of these two powerhouses collaborating; in the world of anime, they are known to produce some iconic works.

As Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer, fans also have a first look at the anime. The preview shows us that the story is set in a world where there is endless darkness and humanity has chosen to take some drastic steps to survive. Alongside the trailer, the streaming giant revealed a new visual and commemorative artwork from original creator Kasumi Yasuda.

What is Fool Night about?

Fool Night offers a narrative that is set in a future where thick clouds have taken over the world and have blocked sunlight from reaching Earth. The result of this is that the environment has collapsed, which has resulted in wiping out most of the plant life. This meant that there is a shortage of oxygen, which is bad for humanity as it is needed for their survival.

To take care of the crisis, society develops a rather controversial procedure. In this, humans can be transformed into oxygen producting plans called Spirit Flowers. While this particular procedure does help with replenishing the oxygen supply, it does make us question human life and whether this move is ethical in the first place.

The story of Fool Night introduces Toshiro Kamiya. He is a young man who is going through poverty, and at the same time, is also taking care of his ill mother. Unable to keep up with the expenses, he starts to consider undergoing the procedure in exchange for financial compensation.

Interestingly, the trailer released emphasizes the manga’s unique blend of eco-horror and social commentary. These visuals suggest that the anime will faithfully capture the unsettling tone that made the manga stand out among readers.
