The Targaryen family tree, untangled

House of the Dragon Season 3 is finally out, and the first episode went straight into the Battle of Gullet, a massive naval and dragon clash involving Corlys Velaryon’s fleet against the Triarchy. The battle focused on the dragon vs. ship combat as Rhaenyra’s son, Jacaerys Velaryon (Jace), was accompanied by his dragon Vermax.

Chaos takes over when dragons and ships collide, including Baela on Moondancer, and we even see the wild dragon Sheepstealer and rider Rhaena. By the end of the first episode, Jace and his dragon end up dying.

There was massive bloodshed in the battle, and Jace’s death will only force Rhaenyra Targaryen to continue fighting against her half-brother. Now that so much is happening between the Targaryens, many viewers must be wondering about their family tree.

The Targaryen family is central to the House of the Dragon series and R.R. Martin’s books. The story gives a closer look into the members during the reign of Viserys I and the civil war, aka the Dance of the Dragons (around 100–130 AC).

The family descends from Valyrian dragonlords who fled the Doom of Valyria. They practice incestuous marriages to keep the bloodline “pure” and are marked by silver-gold hair, violet eyes, and a very strong connection to dragons, as they were always accompanied by them during wars.

So, here’s a detailed look at the Targaryen family tree in House of the Dragon:

1) The older generation (Jaehaerys I’s era)

House of the Dragon begins with Jaehaerys I Targaryen, son of Aenys Targaryen. Jaehaerys was the old king who ruled for a notable period of time and became the grandfather of the main characters:

Jaehaerys I Targaryen (“The Old King”): He was among the powerful rulers who married his sister Alysanne Targaryen. He chose his grandson, Viserys, over his granddaughter, Rhaenys, as heir, setting up future conflict. His children included Aemon Targaryen ( father of Rhaenys), Baelon Targaryen (father of Viserys and Daemon), and others who mostly predeceased him.

Rhaenys Targaryen (“The Queen Who Never Was”): She was the daughter of Aemon Targaryen (Jaehaerys’s son) and passed over for the throne. She married Corlys Velaryon (the Sea Snake, who is not a Targaryen but closely allied to them). They had two children, named Laena Velaryon and Laenor Velaryon.

2) Central generation: Viserys I’s family

Then comes the central branch of the family in House of the Dragon Season 3:

1) Viserys I Targaryen (“The Peaceful”): Viewers might remember him from the start of the series. He’s the grandson of Jaehaerys, who first married his cousin Aemma Arryn (daughter of Daella Targaryen). Later, he tied the knot with Alicent Hightower.

Viserys I Targaryen had one surviving child with Aemma Arryn, Rhaenyra Targaryen. She’s the key figure of the story and was named as the heir by Viserys. Rhaenyra first married Laenor Velaryon, but after his death, she married her uncle Daemon.

Note: In the series, Laenor’s death was faked. He received help from Rhaenyra and Daemon, and once they made people believe that he was dead, Laenor fled with his lover. However, in the book, he was actually stabbed to death.

2) Viserys I Targaryen’s children with Alicent Hightower (the Greens):

Aegon II Targaryen: Viserys’s eldest son. He was crowned king after his father’s death (usurping Rhaenyra in the eyes of the Blacks) and married his sister Helaena.

Helaena Targaryen: Helaena is a Dreamer with prophetic visions and is the wife of Aegon II.

Aemond Targaryen: He’s known as the fierce warrior and is best known as the one-eyed prince since he lost an eye in childhood.

Daeron Targaryen: Viserys and Alicent’s youngest son, who is a ward of the Hightowers.

Here’s a simpler way to understand this key branch of House of the Dragon:

Parents Children
Viserys I + Aemma Arryn Rhaenyra Targaryen
Viserys I + Alicent Hightower Aegon II, Helaena, Aemond, Daeron
Baelon Targaryen Viserys I and Daemon Targaryen

Daemon Targaryen (“The Rogue Prince”): Daemon is Viserys’s younger brother, ambitious and unpredictable. He first married Rhea Royce (deceased), then Laena Velaryon. After Laena’s death, he married Rhaenyra.

After the central generation in House of the Dragon, the family is led by the younger generation:

1) Rhaenyra’s children (Black faction supporters):

  • With Laenor Velaryon (officially; biologically by Harwin Strong): Jacaerys “Jace” Velaryon (deceased), Lucerys “Luke” Velaryon (deceased), Joffrey Velaryon.
  • With Daemon: Aegon III Targaryen (“Aegon the Younger”), Viserys II Targaryen, and a stillborn daughter, Visenya.

2) Daemon and Laena Velaryon’s children:

  • Baela Targaryen: Dragonrider, betrothed to Jace.
  • Rhaena Targaryen: Twin sister of Baela, was betrothed to Luke.

3) Aegon II and Helaena’s children:

  • Twins Jaehaerys (deceased) and Jaehaera, and Maelor.

Velaryon-Targaryen connections: Laena and Laenor tie the powerful Velaryon fleet (and their dragons) to the Targaryen family, a tie further strengthened by the betrothal of their respective children to each other. Rhaenys and Corlys are key Black supporters.
