Why House of the Dragon Season 3 should make you fear Ormund Hightower

Getting compared to a strong and formidable character such as Tywin Lannister undoubtedly raises the intrigue for House of the Dragon Season 3’s Ormund Hightower.

Ryan Condal, the showrunner, in a recent interview, opened up about the power that Ormund Hightower yields, especially in House of the Dragon Season 3. Ormund Hightower easily instills fear in the minds of his opponents with his immense power, making him a brutal and terrifying character in the third season of the series.

Just as Ryan Coldal notes, Ormund Hightower “has the largest standing army” in House of the Dragons Season 3, which is enough to make him a fearsome character in the series. Through the brief introduction that is present in the first episode of the third season, the brutality that the character can inflict resonates deeply. He leads 15,000 men.

The ability to command such a huge number further makes him one of the most dangerous opponents. It will be intriguing to see Ormund navigating through the treacherous complexities in the upcoming episodes of the series with his formidable army.

Cruelty of Ormund Hightower

Ormund Hightower’s calculative and cruel nature makes him a fearful character in House of the Dragon Season 3, especially in the manner in which he seeks out power.

The cruel and calculating nature of Ormund Hightower can be seen when the possibility of Aegon’s death is depicted, and Ormund says that “one king is as good as another.” Ormund, despite his riches, is not “sitting on a throne” somewhere as noted by Ryan Condal; hence, in House of the Dragon Season 3, “he is going to introduce a big old wrinkle” into the storyline.

Yielding a powerful secret weapon

In House of the Dragon Season 3, Ormund is not only the seasoned commander of 15000 men but also has Daeron Targaryen as his ward. Hence, Daeron’s dragon Tessarion also marches with his army, making him even more terrifying. Besides having a huge number of men in his army, the presence of a dragon undeniably creates a catastrophic situation for his enemies.

Despite very little being known about him, with these powerful aspects, he has already become a force to be reckoned with. He is easily capable of taking down entire armies.

Ormund Hightower’s character is depicted by the very talented James Norton. Just like his other projects, James Norton completely embodies Ormund’s character in House of the Dragon Season 3. Some of the other notable projects of James Norton, besides this series, that can also be added to your watchlist are House of Guinness, where he took on the role of Sean Rafferty, King & Conqueror, Playing Nice, Happy Valley, The Nevers, etc.

Besides James Norton, some of the other cast members are Emma D’Arcy, bringing life to Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Ewan Mitchell, etc. After a dramatic first episode, the anticipation for the upcoming episode is rising at an exponential pace. As the series is following a weekly release, the second episode is set to drop on June 28 at 9 PM ET.

Instead of ten episodes as seen in the first season, the third season will have eight episodes and will be available for streaming on HBO Max. At the end of the first episode of Season 3, Jacaerys Velaryon comes across a tragic death. The manner in which the arrows struck him the moment he tried to swim to the surface leaves a lasting impact. The brooding atmosphere of the episode is further enhanced by the depiction of the aftermath of the battle.
