Actor Faizon Love has been released from jail after appearing in a Florida courtroom over allegations that he owes approximately $250,000 in unpaid child support, with his attorney arguing that years of financial hardship have left him unable to make the required payments.
Love, 58, who is known for roles in Elf, Couples Retreat and The Replacements, was released on June 19 after spending several days in custody. According to court records, he was arrested on contempt of court charges tied to an ongoing child support dispute that resurfaced earlier this month.
During his first court appearance, the actor and his attorney maintained that he has struggled financially for years and currently lacks the income needed to satisfy the court-ordered payments.
The case centers on years of unpaid support
The latest legal battle began after Tiffany Lee, identified by multiple outlets as Love’s former partner, reopened a declaration-of-paternity case on June 11.
Lee alleges that the actor owes roughly $250,000 in unpaid child support and has failed to make court ordered payments for years. The amount has become the focus of a contentious legal dispute that has drawn attention to Love’s finances and career struggles.
Court records show Love was arrested in California before being transferred to Florida. He reportedly served 16 days in a California jail before being booked into the Hillsborough County jail in Tampa on June 16.
At the hearing, Lee and her legal team argued that Love had repeatedly failed to meet his obligations despite previous court orders. The actor, however, insisted that his financial situation has deteriorated to the point where he cannot afford the monthly payments.
Love says his income has dramatically declined
According to court filings and statements made during the hearing, Love told the court that his income has fallen sharply in recent years.
The actor reportedly said he relies heavily on royalty payments from the 2003 holiday comedy Elf, earning about $10,000 annually from the film. Documents cited by multiple outlets also indicate that Love claimed his highest annual income over the last five years was $13,000 and that he earned no income in 2025.
His attorney, Glen Lansky, argued that Love’s current financial condition does not reflect the public perception of a successful Hollywood actor.
Lansky said the actor has experienced severe financial setbacks and previously faced homelessness. The attorney also revealed that Love missed out on a movie opportunity while serving time related to the contempt charges, which he said further complicated his efforts to rebuild his career.
The actor appeared in court in a wheelchair and told the judge that he wants to continue acting and writing while pursuing additional work opportunities.
Attorney clarifies homelessness claim
One of the most talked about moments from the hearing came when Love’s attorney described his past struggles with housing.
Lansky told the court that the actor had previously been homeless and at one point lived in his car. The comments quickly sparked headlines suggesting Love was currently without a home.
After the hearing, however, the attorney clarified the situation in a statement.
Lansky said Love was homeless only for a brief period and is not currently living on the streets. According to the attorney, the actor now resides with a friend in California while attempting to stabilize his finances and career.
The clarification came as public interest in the case grew, fueled by the contrast between Love’s well known film career and the financial difficulties described in court.
Judge sets next deadline in the case
The legal battle is far from over. A judge has ordered Love to submit a financial statement by July 1 to verify his claim that he is unable to meet the child support obligations.
The filing could play a significant role in determining whether the court modifies the existing payment arrangement or pursues additional enforcement measures.
Following Friday’s hearing, Lansky said he was satisfied with the proceedings and plans to take over all remaining matters related to the case.
The attorney also said he intends to file a petition seeking to modify the child support order, arguing that Love‘s current financial circumstances should be taken into account as the dispute moves forward.
For now, the actor remains out of jail as he prepares for the next chapter in a legal fight that has put both his finances and his future career prospects under renewed scrutiny.
