The highly anticipated return of Finola Hughes to General Hospital and her iconic role of Anna Devane is happening! Viewers have waited for Anna’s story to continue on-screen for months now, and according to GH spoilers, she’ll be back on screen on Wednesday, June 24, when Anna meets with her doctor.
Where Has Anna Been

Hughes’s castmate, Chris McKenna (Brennan), first revealed that the Daytime Emmy-winner was back at the show in a social media post. Ever since then (heck, even before that post!), fans have been longing for her return.
The actress took a break from the show late last year and made an appearance earlier this year. Since then, her character, Anna, has been referenced by her loved ones as they’ve shared updates on what’s been going on. Not that long ago, Laura (Genie Francis) revealed to Anna’s loved ones that she had escaped the hospital where she’d been staying.
Laura recounted that Anna’s effort to escape was valiant (we’d expect nothing less!), but that she was captured and is now in a far more secure locale.
“A” Her Name Is Anna
Introduced to the show in 1985, Anna wore a fake scar on her face, referring to it as her “penance” because of some misdeeds over which she felt guilty. Hughes came on around the same time that Emma Samms (Holly) was exiting GH to join the cast of Dynasty, taking over the role of Fallon Carrington Colby from Pamela Sue Martin.
Anna was revealed to be the former wife of Robert Scorpio (the late Tristan Rogers), and the mother of his daughter, Robin (Kimberly McCullough).
For years, Anna was the show’s lead heroine. Her pairings with Duke (Ian Buchanan) and Robert were incredibly popular. In 1992, Hughes exited the show, along with Rogers. She was the female lead in the short-lived ABC primetime show Jack’s Place, which starred Hal Linden (Barney Miller).
As Anna was presumed dead in a boat explosion (along with Robert), Hughes returned as a figment of Robin’s imagination after she went through the trauma of losing her boyfriend, Stone Cates (Michael Sutton), and learning that she was HIV-positive.
Hughes returned to ABC Daytime in 2001, joining All My Children as both Anna and her twin, Alexandra. In Pine Valley, Anna reunited with Robin. In 2006, Hughes returned to GH, where she and Robert were reunited.
Hughes returned to GH full-time in 2012 and has remained a staple on the show ever since.
Her return is happening at a time when WSB director Ross Cullum (Andrew Speaks) has been menacing Port Charles with his evil schemes and resting-villain face.
Even Anna’s loved ones feel that she’s unwell. Or has Cullum manipulated people into believing that that’s the case? Anna has outwitted many a foe in the past. Our money’s on her to come out on top and vanquish the villains! Stay tuned to see what happens!
