After an intense ending to the first season, Sugar Season 2 sets the stage with complicated turns of events for John Sugar as he stays back on Earth. By the end of the first season, things took a turn for the aliens, causing them to return to their planet.
John stayed back to find the answers that he has been looking for, and Sugar Season 2 starts off with John realizing a devastating truth.

John gets entangled in a complex case while he copes with a tragic loss in Sugar Season 2 Episode 1
Sugar Season 2 Episode 1 starts with John Sugar speaking about the reason for his staying back on Earth. He needed to find the answers about his sister. In a flashback scene, it is revealed that he had found Henry, but by the time he reached him, Henry was almost dying. Before John could get any answer from Henry, he died in his arms.
After Henry’s death, John burned his body along with the belongings that he had. John begins to regret staying back, as he was sure that he would be able to find the answers, but in the end, he loses more. He is tormented by the loneliness that he is left with now, as all of his friends have left. He finds a letter where Ruby has written about her departure and how she will feel as she will not be able to meet John anymore.
Sugar Season 2 Episode 1 continues with John playing with dogs in a park by using his telekinetic powers to hover a ball in the air. He begins to reminisce about Ruby’s letter, as now he has to find a client by himself. Right at that moment, he gets a call from an old friend, Munzer Amin. Through Munzer, John is given the case of boxer Danny Moon. It is about Danny Moon’s brother, Ji Moon, who has gone missing for three days.
Though Danny thinks that his brother is playing a prank on him by sending two voicemails, John thinks there might be more to it. One of the voicemails has the sound of Ji running down the stairs, while the other has Ji saying that he is scared that someone might come for him. John decides to take the case even though, if Ruby were present there, she would have disapproved of this decision. Sugar Season 2 Episode 1 continues with John going to Koreatown to ask about Ji Moon. He begins to ask around about Ji Moon from the people, but does not get any answers.
He eventually goes to a pool parlor where he meets Tala. He urges Tala to play a game with him, with the deal that if he wins, she would tell him about Ji Moon, and if he loses, Tala could take John’s car out for a spin. John’s skills shine bright in the game, and he wins. However, before he could ask Tala about Ji Moon, he was notified that his car had been taken away. He rushes out only to find a woman named Val standing there with no sign of his car.
Val tells John that she knows the person who took his car, and she could help him find it in exchange for 300 bucks. While Val goes to bring back John’s car, Tala arrives and begins to speak to him. She tells John about Hannah McDaniels, the woman whom Ji Moon was seeing. Tala tells John to find Ji Moon, as many other people are also looking for him. Val eventually returns with his car, and he returns home.
Sugar Season 2 Episode 1 continues with John opening the alien radio to see if someone else also stayed behind like him. The loneliness has already started to affect him, even though he has a case to solve. He then decides to go to town to a restaurant. Later, John searches for Ji Moon and Danny Moon online to find clues for the case. Through the searches, John understands that Ji Moon and Danny Moon have been going in different directions.
While Danny is on the rise, Ji is struggling with his life. What drew John to the case was the terrified voice that Ji had on the voicemail. Sugar Season 2 Episode 1 continues with John deciding to meet Hannah McDaniels. Hannah is a nurse at St. Anthony’s. Though initially Hannah is reluctant to speak about Ji as she thinks that John is from HR and was there to fire her, she eventually opens up after knowing the truth. Hannah reveals that Ji was in the hospital four days ago to steal medicines.
They were supposed to meet, but when she reached the location, Ji never showed up. John begins to check the stairwell of the hospital, which Ji might have used in the voicemail. At the end of Sugar Season 2 Episode 1, John gets a text, causing him to rush to the Hollywood Hills, where Bogart used to live. He enters the house and finds that his stuff has arrived.
From the house, Senator Tyson Pavich’s house can be seen. Tyson is Ryan’s father. His goal is to find the truth about how Tyson Pavich came to know about his species. John now has two of these cases in his hand; even though it might be a bit much for him, he has to move on with them.
