In Watt’s novel Blindsight, the alien Scramblers show a hive mind that works without human-like thought or emotion. Dark City’s strangers and The Matrix’s Machines follow the same rule. They are collective systems built for survival and efficiency.
However, complex systems eventually fail when chaos appears. In Dark City, a glitch created John Murdoch, whom the Strangers injected with disorder, emotion, and control. Thereafter, he gained the ability to alter the system itself. Because he holds human disorder and the power to tune, he does more than just survive inside the system. He is someone good born from an error, who can rewrite his code to fix himself.
How were these errors fixed in The Matrix?
The machines built The Matrix to prevent the birth of another Murdoch. They divided his abilities into parts. One is the architect, who represents logic, and another one is the oracle, who represents intuition. In this film, Neo was designed to be a safer version of Murdoch with the help of Oracle.
According to Oracle, humans could accept or reject the simulation. With this release value, 99% of minds accept the code. The machines realized that the 1% rejection would corrupt the Matrix and spawn another anomaly. Instead of fighting it, they turned it into a prophecy.
They let Neo gain god-like power to change code in the Wachowskis’ 1999 movie. But they built a trap called the Path of the One. He must return his code to the source, not destroy the simulation.
