The Wheel of Time reboot is the last thing fans need now

The Wheel of Time reboot is on its way. The live-action series, which debuted in 2021 and ran for three seasons, was created by Rafe Judkins and starred Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, and Madeleine Madden. The series was reportedly canceled last year due to budget concerns despite receiving positive feedback.

As per the recent reports, the franchise is preparing to reach fans again through film, an animated series, and a video game. The upcoming projects are being developed by the rights holders of the series in partnership with Thomas Wu, famous for Arcane and Initiate Entertainment.

However, The Wheel of Time animated reboot arrives at a time when many fans are still disappointed by the end of the series and might not see it as the replacement they wanted.

While many fans have a mixed opinion about it after the original series’ cancellation news, others see The Wheel of Time reboot as a fresh beginning. However, there’s a great chance that The Wheel of Time animated reboot, which is coming in the forms of an animated series, video game, and film, might not fix the real concern.

Let’s have a look at the three major reasons why The Wheel of Time reboot won’t solve the franchise’s problems.

1) The adaptation is what matters most

The format doesn’t seem to be the main issue with the franchise, but the adaptation is. The original series had tons of changes when compared to the book, be it arcs or pacing. This also left many concerned as they felt the series didn’t completely deliver what the book did.

While The Wheel of Time animated reboot through a video game, an animated series, or a film is great for new possibilities, without following the original Robert Jordan books, a reboot in any format risks repeating the same mistakes.

2) Animation might limit the audience

While The Wheel of Time series was aimed at fans of large-scale dramas, the new The Wheel of Time reboot appears to be taking a different route by focusing on younger viewers through animated projects and games, who are more likely to attract this crowd. Additionally, the reboot also seems to introduce the franchise to a larger audience by reaching people who might not have watched the previous series.

However, it’s important to consider that a lot of viewers still prefer watching live-action series instead of animation. In short, the animation definitely has the potential to attract new fans, but it might not appeal to everyone who enjoys The Wheel of Time books. Additionally, the longtime readers of the book might find it difficult to connect to the story in an animated form, especially if it doesn’t align with the original book material.

3) The format isn’t the only concern

The problems that come with the challenges of adapting a major franchise remain even when we switch to different reboot formats. While The Wheel of Time reboot has the potential to attract new audiences, the formats will also require high-quality production, which needs big investments, while making sure they appeal to the larger audience watching them.

The Wheel of Time got canceled because of “financial” reasons, as reported by Deadline, showing that changing the format alone might not solve every challenge.

At this stage, fans can only wait and see how things develop. More updates on the reboot are yet to be announced.
