Rock band Chicago’s founding member Walter Parazaider passed away on June 17 at the age of 81. The veteran saxophonist died after his long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and took his last breath in hospice care. On Wednesday, Parazaider’s daughter Felicia Helen broke the news of her father’s demise via a Facebook post.
Walter Parazaider opened up about his Alzheimer’s diagnosis five years ago in April 2021. Following the diagnosis, the saxophonist stayed positive and relied on his family’s love and support. He also praised his doctor and medical facility. As reported by Deadline, Parazaider posted about his Alzheimer’s struggle on the band’s official website.
“Five months ago, I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Needless to say, my wife, daughters and myself were shocked and devastated. It has taken awhile to process this news and the fact is, we still are. The good news is we have a wonderful medical facility here and I have a very good doctor. I am working hard and not going to give up.” Parazaider wrote.
At the time, the musician expressed optimism and wrote that he felt “very positive about the future” given the new treatments and the support of his family.
Walter Parazaider’s daughter announced his death
In her Facebook post, Parazaider’s daughter shared the news of Walter Parazaider’s death.
“I didn’t get back in time. My father, my hero, is gone. He went peacefully about 20 minutes ago. There’s no more pain. No more struggle.”
Felicia Helen Parazaider suggested that at the time of death the Chicago member was alone with his wife.
“I psychically knew I wasn’t going to make it back in time. And I knew that it would be just my mom and him. It’s how it was in the beginning. Just the two of them. And so it should’ve been in the end,” she added.
Walter Parazaider’s daughter thanked people who prayed for her father. At the same time, she expressed her disbelief and penned:
“I’m in shock and disbelief and yet not at all. This was the worst six years. The hardest season of my life. And I’m so grateful that my dad is not suffering anymore. I love you poppy, my Pal. You coloured our world. God bless you, you dear soul. I love you beyond thoughts and words.”
Walter Parazaider was among the first seven members of Chicago, which was initially named The Big Thing. The rock band was founded in 1967. Parazaider is survived by his wife, JacLynn, and daughters Laura and Felicia.
