Trader Joe’s has done it again. The California-based grocery chain released its newest collectible accessory on Wednesday, June 17, and if history is any guide, they will not last long. The latest addition to the grocer’s ever-growing tote bag lineup is the mini striped canvas tote, available in four pastel striped colorways and priced at just $2.99 each.
The bags measure 13 inches long, 11 inches tall and six inches wide, constructed from a heavy-duty blend of cotton and polyester. Each bag includes a pocket on either side, making them as functional as they are fashionable. Trader Joe’s described the size as ideal for smaller shopping trips, perfect for grabbing a few forgotten items, but cautioned customers that supplies are limited and encouraged shoppers to act quickly.
A cult following that keeps on growing
To understand why a $2.99 grocery bag generates this level of excitement, it helps to know how this all started. Trader Joe’s mini tote bags first went viral in March 2024, spreading rapidly across social media platforms and quickly becoming one of the more unlikely fashion accessories of recent years. What began as a practical in-store item evolved into a collectible that people genuinely hunted for, with some shoppers visiting multiple locations in search of specific colorways.
Since that initial wave of popularity, Trader Joe’s has leaned into the phenomenon with a steady stream of new releases. The grocer has dropped Halloween-themed mini canvas totes, micro totes, insulated mini totes and pastel mini canvas totes, each generating its own round of social media buzz. A lavender reusable insulated bag and a new large canvas tote also debuted earlier this year, keeping the momentum going well into 2026.
The striped mini canvas tote is the latest chapter in that story, and the four pastel colorways feel tailor-made for summer.
How to get one before they sell out
The bags are only available inside Trader Joe’s stores and are not sold online through the grocer’s own channels. Given the limited supply and the established pattern of these drops selling out quickly, getting to a store early on or after June 17 is the most reliable strategy. Trader Joe’s has not announced how many units are available per location, so timing and a bit of luck remain part of the equation.
It is also worth noting that Trader Joe’s does not operate stores outside the United States, which has historically driven a secondary resale market for international fans of the brand.
A lawsuit and a warning about knockoffs
The popularity of Trader Joe’s tote bags has attracted an unwelcome side effect. The grocer confirmed to USA TODAY that it has recently filed a lawsuit targeting knockoff versions of its tote bags being sold online. Counterfeit versions have appeared on platforms including eBay, Depop, Mercari, Coupang and Karrot, often listed by U.S.-based shoppers at prices that dwarf the in-store retail cost.
Resale prices for authentic Trader Joe’s totes on international platforms have been known to exceed $1,000, a staggering markup for a bag that retails for a few dollars in store. Trader Joe’s stated clearly that it only sells its products inside its own stores and urged customers to be cautious about purchasing from third-party sellers who may be offering counterfeit goods.
A summer staple with serious staying power
What makes the Trader Joe’s tote phenomenon so enduring is how effortlessly it sits at the intersection of affordability, practicality and style. For $2.99, shoppers are not just buying a bag. They are participating in something that has taken on a life of its own, one seasonal drop at a time.
