Tropical moisture from a Gulf low pressure system brings serious flash flooding risk to Houston this
A Stage 2 flood alert is now in effect for the greater Houston area, beginning Sunday and expected to remain active through Friday. The alert was issued by Space City Weather after a combination of weather factors converged to create a significant rainfall threat across the region for much of the coming week.
Three key conditions are driving the elevated concern: 1. an absence of high pressure over the area, 2. a weakening weather front moving in early in the week, and 3. a surge of tropical moisture tied to a low pressure system sitting in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. While forecasters do not anticipate that the Gulf system will develop into a named tropical depression or storm, the moisture it is carrying is more than enough to produce dangerous rainfall on its own.
What residents can expect this week
Most areas across the Houston region are projected to receive between 3 and 6 inches of rain before the week is out, though isolated pockets could see significantly higher totals depending on where the heaviest bands set up. Because tropical moisture is capable of producing intense bursts of rain in a short window, flash flooding is a genuine concern throughout the alert period.
On the Space City Weather flood scale, a Stage 2 designation signals that some locations are likely to face meaningful disruptions. That could include flooded streets, closed freeway lanes and hazardous driving conditions at various points during the week. While most of the region is expected to be manageable most of the time, no area should assume it is completely out of reach of the heavier rainfall.
Sunday sets the tone
Houston was already seeing scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday morning, and that activity is expected to continue through the afternoon and into the evening hours. The storms are not anticipated to be highly organized, but they will be frequent enough that anyone spending time outdoors, whether watching World Cup soccer or enjoying the weekend, should stay aware of conditions and have a plan to quickly seek shelter if a storm develops nearby. High temperatures Sunday will reach the lower 90s with partially sunny skies between rain chances.
The heaviest rain likely mid to late week
Looking further ahead, the best chances for the most significant rainfall appear to fall between Monday evening and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday may bring a slight easing in coverage before the possibility of another round of heavier rain returns heading into Friday. Forecasters have been candid that pinpointing exactly where and when the heaviest totals will fall remains difficult at this stage, and the situation will need to be reassessed on a daily basis as the week unfolds.
Meteorologists will be monitoring conditions closely and plan to issue updates as clearer information becomes available.
A heads up for World Cup visitors
With Houston currently hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup matches, the city has an unusually high number of international visitors in town this week. Those who are unfamiliar with how quickly Houston’s streets can flood during heavy rain events are encouraged to review guidance on what to expect. Traveling between venues or spending extended time outdoors will require extra attention to weather updates throughout the week.
Residents and visitors alike are advised to stay informed, avoid flood-prone roads during heavy rain, and never attempt to drive through flooded streets.
