Federal authorities are investigating a large imprint of the numbers 8647 that appeared in the grass of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., just days before President Donald Trump’s birthday on June 14. US Park Police responded to a report of vandalism at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday after the markings were spotted near the World War II Memorial on the west lawn of the mall.
Aerial images and photos taken from a live camera atop the Washington Monument clearly showed the numbers, with the 8 appearing most prominently and the 6, 4 and 7 visible to varying degrees in the grass. The Washington Post reported the numerals were already visible as early as Tuesday. The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing and the investigation remains ongoing.
What 8647 means and why it matters
The numbers have been at the center of political controversy for months. In American slang, the term 86 means to throw out, get rid of or refuse service to someone, a phrase with roots in 1930s restaurant and bar culture. The number 47 is widely understood as a reference to Trump, the 47th president. Together, 8647 has been used by opponents of the administration as a shorthand for removing Trump from office.
The Trump administration has taken a harder line, arguing the numbers suggest a threat against the president. The Interior Department described the latest incident as deranged vandalism and said any threat against the president is taken very seriously. The White House also issued a statement condemning what it characterized as political violence and assassination culture, calling on anyone connected to the markings to be held accountable.
A pattern of 8647 incidents
The National Mall marking is the latest in a series of high-profile incidents involving the numbers. In 2025, former FBI Director James Comey posted an image on Instagram showing seashells arranged to spell out 8647 on a beach. The post was deleted but not before sparking outrage from the Trump administration. Comey was subsequently indicted in April of this year on charges related to an alleged threat against the president. He has maintained his innocence, called the prosecution politically motivated and vowed to fight the case on free speech grounds.
Earlier this month, a federal judge blocked the National Park Service from taking action against a progressive group that displayed an 8647 flag during a permitted demonstration near the George Meade Statue in D.C. The group, Accountability NOW USA, had been calling for Trump’s removal from office when the flag prompted a Secret Service investigation. The judge ruled it would be difficult to conclude that a reasonable observer would view the flag as a genuine threat.
The numbers have also appeared at various protests against the Trump administration throughout the year, including the March No Kings demonstrations in which protesters marched from Arlington, Virginia, to the National Mall.
The broader context
The incident unfolds at a sensitive moment for the National Mall. The site is being prepared to host events celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence, and a 16-day Great American State Fair is scheduled to take place at the Mall in the coming weeks. The mall is also the backdrop for an ongoing beautification campaign led by Trump that includes a plan to repaint the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at a cost of $13.1 million and a proposal to construct an arch decorated with golden figures including lions and eagles.
The appearance of 8647 on the grass days before Trump turns 80, and just before a UFC event planned at the White House, adds another layer of political tension to an already charged moment in the capital.
