Gatto is Pixar’s first venture into 2D animation, and the teaser trailer of the film has been released. While Pixar is known for its revolutionary work in 3D animation, and the studio has used 2D elements in films like Wall-e, Gatto will be the studio’s first entirely 2D film.
Directed by Enrico Casarosa, the film will follow the adventures of Nero, a black cat, who starts working for a cat mob boss he is indebted to. Along the way, Nero will figure out if the life he has lived is really a full one and end up forging an unexpected friendship.
Gatto teaser trailer shows us a cat interrogation that goes sideways
The Gatto teaser trailer begins with Nero and the mob boss cat, Rocco, interrogating a much smaller ginger cat they have kept hostage in an attic with a dimly lit bulb. Interestingly, these cats have somehow managed to tie up their hostage with a rope, much like what humans do. We see the hostage cat tell Rocco that it wasn’t him, but Rocco cuts him off by asking him to
”Start yapping.”
followed by the question:
”Where is the tuna?”
In true cat fashion, Rocco’s question is about tuna, one of the most important things of a cat’s life. The hostage cat insists that Rocco has captured the wrong cat and that he has no information about the tuna. Nero begins to threaten the hostage cat by saying,
”Tell the truth or things are going to get pretty…”
Nero gets distracted by the bulb above them mid-sentence and then gets back to it, saying,
”whoa… pretty ugly.’
While Rocco continues to interrogate their hostage, Nero gets distracted by the bulb and tries to play with it, like most cats do. Rocco asks him to focus, but by then he gets distracted by the bulb as well and says,
”I want it.’
in the exact way you’d imagine a cat might say it if they could talk. Nero and Rocco both try to grab the bulb like cats do, but since their paws aren’t meant for grabbing, they are just able to jab at it. Initially, when the hostage cat tries to play with the bulb too, his captors don’t let him, but we soon see all three cats playing with the bulb.
Nero and Rocco have completely forgotten about the interrogation and the tuna and are too busy playing with the bulb, even letting their hostage join in on the fun eventually. At the end, as cats end up doing stupid things, Rocco puts the bulb in his mouth to be the one who finally possesses it and ends up getting an electric shock.
Since the two other cats were in extreme close contact with Rocco, they got the shock as well. The logline of the film, according to the trailer’s YouTube description, is the following:
In “Gatto,” after years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city of Venice, Italy, Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives. Indebted to Rocco, the local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose—unless Venice gets the better of him first.
Gatto will star Mark Ruffalo as Nero, Laurence Fishburne as Rocco, and Ismail Elsene as Lauren. The rest of the voice cast is yet to be revealed. Gatto is produced by Andrea Warren and executive produced by Pete Docter. The film is collaboratively produced by Disney & Pixar.
Gatto will be released in theaters on March 5, 2027.
