A comment the made during a Variety interview about teachers having a ceiling has circulated online
Tracy Morgan is drawing criticism after remarks he made about teachers during a recent interview circulated widely online, prompting a wave of responses from educators who described the comments as dismissive and out of touch.
The comments came during Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors series, where Morgan was paired with Saturday Night Live cast member Marcello Hernández. The two were discussing their school experiences and what it might have been like to grow up together when the conversation took a sharp turn.
What was said
Hernández, who has previously spoken about struggling with attention deficit disorder in school, described being labeled a troublemaker for talking too much and engaging in what teachers characterized as mischief. Morgan responded warmly at first, suggesting that teachers simply did not understand Hernández or recognize his comedic gift.
The tone shifted when Morgan pivoted to teachers themselves. He suggested they were still earning minimum wage while Hernández was getting paid for the same behavior they once tried to suppress. When Hernández pushed back gently, Morgan continued, saying he cannot stand teachers because they operate with a ceiling and a limit. He framed it as a contrast to how he raises his own children, telling them the sky is the limit.
Hernández appeared caught off guard by the escalation, reacting visibly. The exchange drew less laughter and more discomfort than the earlier parts of the conversation.
The response online
After Variety shared a clip of the exchange, the reaction on social media was swift and pointed. Several teachers and supporters of public education weighed in, with many describing the comments as a misrepresentation of what teaching involves and what teachers contribute.
One response came from an educator who noted the timing of the clip’s release during the final week of the school year, describing the work still happening in classrooms during that period. Another reply referenced Morgan’s 2014 accident, in which he was seriously injured and left hospitalized in a coma after being struck by a Walmart truck, and the substantial legal settlement that followed, drawing a contrast between his path to financial security and the options available to most people. A third user said the comments marked the first time they had heard Morgan say something genuinely offensive, while also acknowledging that many people carry complicated feelings about teachers shaped by their own school experiences.
Context and background
Morgan dropped out of high school before completing his diploma in order to care for his father, who was ill at the time. He has spoken publicly about that decision over the years in largely positive terms, saying in a past interview that leaving school redirected him toward the career that followed. He has starred in Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, and most recently The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.
Hernández, for his part, offered a more measured response during the interview itself, saying teachers are not paid enough rather than endorsing the broader criticism Morgan leveled.
The two also discussed their respective SNL auditions during the conversation, described each other as inspirations, and teased a potential future sketch involving a Dominican father and son.
The teacher remarks, however, are the portion of the interview that found the widest audience.
