Netflix released a true crime documentary, The Crash, and explained the whole story behind 2018’s Toyota Camry accident. Gareth Johnson directed the show. The plot shows Mackenzie Shirilla’s life sentence and her statements after it for recklessly driving a car into a brick building at one hundred miles per hour.
According to Shirilla, her boyfriend and a friend were going for a high school graduation party in the car, and both were killed in the crash. The incident took place on the last day of July morning in 2022. The investigation team recovered a black box from the accident site.
Shrilla is now in prison and from there she gave an interview to the director. She could not explain the cause of the crash, but she broke her silence by saying that she had never told her side of the story.

The Crash: Mackenzie explains her relationship with her boyfriend
The twenty-one year-old Mackenzie explains on The Crash that people made different stories regarding the accident, but she wants to tell the truth. She had a boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and a friend, Davion, with whom she was driving the car. She wanted Dominic to marry her, as he was very protective and loving. She said that they were partners who always took care of each other.
According to her statement, she and her boyfriend were friends from childhood. As years passed, they grew closer and stayed together. Three of them were returning home after attending a high school graduation party.
After the crash happened, police came and said:
“You’re under arrest. We have a warrant for your arrest.”
She shouts,
“Why? Wait, we have a lawyer. I have to call my lawyer.”
The Crash: Mackenzie denies murder allegations
In the documentary, Judge Nancy Russo said that Mackenzie was not driving recklessly, she murdered both of them. However, in prison, Mackenzie denied the judge’s statement and said, how could she murder her own boyfriend? She explains about the incident and says,
“The whole morning is just like nothing, and it sounds crazy, …….but I like, I can’t, I’m not gonna, like, lie just because people want to hear a story…………..I have no recollection of that morning…….. I’m not saying I’m innocent. …..I was a driver of a tragedy, but I’m not a murderer.”
Her statement seems confusing when she says, “I’m not saying I’m innocent.” The Joslyn Law Firm said that the judge will have to first go through the evidence and then hear arguments from both sides. The judge can deliver the final verdict after they have collected all the evidences from both the lawyers and Mackenzie.
Mackenzie’s lawyers showed a 2017 diagnosis of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome to the judge as part of her defense during the trial. According to NHS reports, this type of health condition happens due to the increase of a person’s heart rate and can cause dizziness.
