Hunter Davenport’s shocking arrival in the Off Campus Season 1 finale has increased the stakes for Allie and Dean’s complicated romance as the couple heads into the sophomore season of Prime Video’s latest sports romance series, based on Elle Kennedy’s eponymous book series.
Off Campus Season 1, based on Kennedy’s The Deal, adapted the steamy romance between Briar University hockey captain Garrett Graham and aspiring singer-songwriter Hannah Wells. Kennedy readers were in for a surprise as the freshman season of Off Campus also brought Hannah’s best friend Allie and defenseman Dean Di-Laurentis’ secret fling into the fold. The final moments of the Season 1 finale saw Logan trying to recruit Hunter Davenport after Garrett was suspended from the team for attacking Aaron Delaney.
Fans might have recognized Hunter as Carter, Allie’s one-night stand from an earlier episode. With Dean’s hatred and complicated past with Hunter and the latter’s hookup with Allie, the mysterious newcomer is set to become one of the biggest hurdles in the couple’s relationship in Off Campus Season 2.

Who is Hunter Davenport in Off Campus?
The Off Campus Season 1 finale concluded with a surprise reveal that Carter St. James V is actually a skilled hockey player named Hunter Davenport, who was using a fake alias and even slept with Allie while she was hooking up with Dean. This shocking reveal came as a surprise (even for Kennedy readers) as the Prime Video show made major changes to this mysterious new character.
For the uninitiated, Hunter Davenport is a freshman introduced in the second Off Campus book. Fans of the show would be surprised to discover that Dean and Hunter actually became good friends as the former gives hockey lessons to the freshman, setting up their friendship in the books. While Hunter remains a side character in the Off Campus books, he does not interact with any female leads, unlike the show, where he actually hooks up with Allie.
While Hunter Davenport remains in the shadows in Kennedy’s books, he finally gets his own book in the author’s spin-off series, Briar U. The mysterious Off Campus Season 1 character is the protagonist in the third book of the Briar U series titled ‘The Play‘, which follows his relationship with Demi Davis, a sharp-witted and independent psychology student.
How will Hunter Davenport affect Allie and Dean’s romance in Off Campus Season 2?
The Off Campus Season 1 finale completely diverts from Kennedy’s timeline, not only introducing Hunter Davenport early on but setting up his rivalry with Dean. While the show is yet to explore Dean and Hunter’s complicated past, their rivalry goes way back, likely connected to Dean’s sister Summer. In addition to Garrett and Hannah, Allie and Dean take center stage in Off Campus Season 1, though the series introduced several changes to their storyline from The Score, the third book in Elle Kennedy’s series.
Like the books, Allie and Dean began a secret fling after the former’s break-up with her longtime boyfriend Sean. While the couple’s book counterparts made an important decision after Thanksgiving dinner about starting a real relationship, their show counterparts had other plans. As seen in Off Campus Season 1, while Dean starts to fall in love, Allie decides to hook up with other people, including Hunter Davenport, which leads to a major dramatic moment in the finale.
While Dean already harbours hatred for Hunter Davenport, he loses his calm when he discovers that he hooked up with Allie, leading to their fight in Malone’s in the finale.
While Hunter’s early introduction in the Season 1 finale is a major diversion from the books, showrunner Louisa Levy wanted to leave Allie and Dean’s story on a major cliffhanger for Off Campus Season 2. In a recent interview with Variety, Levy revealed:
”We needed to throw a wrench into Dean and Allie’s arrangement to elongate their story, and pulling from that universe felt right — especially because he is a key player in Summer’s story when we eventually get there.”
Levy was tight-lipped whether Off Campus Season 2 would adapt Allie and Dean’s romance but Hunter Davenport will continue to be a major obstacle in the couple’s path as they head into the upcoming season.
