Hannah Harper becomes the first female country winner since Carrie Underwood.
American Idol crowned Hannah Harper as the winner of its 24th season on Monday night, closing out a three-hour finale that drew one of the show’s most emotional conclusions in recent memory. The 25-year-old stay-at-home mom from Willow Springs, Missouri, won the fan vote over runner-up Jordan McCullough and third-place finisher Keyla Richardson.
Harper becomes the first female country artist to win the competition since Carrie Underwood, who now serves as one of the show’s judges and had been openly championing Harper throughout the season.
How Hannah Harper got here
Harper’s path to the finale was anything but predictable. She arrived at her audition wearing a colorful patchwork dress she had sewn herself and performed an original song called String Cheese, written about her experience with postpartum depression. The performance spread rapidly across social media, becoming one of the most-watched videos in the show’s recent history.
Her story resonated beyond the stage. A mother of three, Harper spoke openly about what the competition required of her family. Her husband relocated the entire household to live out of a hotel for two months so she could see the process through. She described her win as something made possible by a wider circle of support, from her husband and parents to the audience that rallied around her audition from the start.
Underwood, who won American Idol during its fourth season, drew a direct comparison between herself and Harper during Episode 8, telling her she reminded her of what she looked like at that stage of the competition.
The contestants Hannah beat
Keyla Richardson, 29, from Pensacola, Florida, was widely considered one of the season’s most commanding voices. A music teacher and mother of a 9-year-old son, she had reached the final year of her age eligibility for the show. Her audition performance of Pink’s Glitter in the Air left the judges visibly moved, and guest mentor Keke Palmer later compared her to Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino.
Jordan McCullough, 27, a worship director from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, brought a distinctive vocal range and a consistent ability to reinvent familiar material. He had drawn attention from Jennifer Hudson before the competition, after the EGOT winner commented on one of his social media videos. Original American Idol judge Paula Abdul described his duet performance in the penultimate episode as worthy of a Grammys stage.
A finale built for the moment
The three-hour broadcast featured performances from judges Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, alongside guest artists Nelly, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Womack, and Jason Mraz.
Richie, entering his ninth season as a judge, reflected on what he passed along to Harper after the win. He acknowledged that the pressure of a music career does not ease after a competition ends. A debut hit is quickly followed by expectations for what comes next, and sustaining that momentum requires something a television title alone cannot manufacture.
What the winner takes home
Along with the title, Harper receives a $250,000 prize and a recording contract with Hollywood Records and 19 Recordings. She enters the music industry with an original song already proven to connect with a wide audience, a clear sense of the story she wants to tell, and a platform that few emerging country artists receive this early in their careers.
Harper said she plans to rest before heading out on tour through the fall, performing in smaller, more intimate venues.
