The Charlie Kirk Show members, including TPUSA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet, shared their reaction to Pete Davidson’s Charlie Kirk joke at Kevin Hart’s Netflix roast. Hart’s roast special streamed on Netflix on May 11, in which a number of comedians and celebrities mocked each other. Actor and comedian Pete Davidson also roasted fellow comedians and other guests at Kevin Hart’s show.
While taking shots at Tony Hinchcliffe, Pete Davidson seemingly made a reference to Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed at a public event last year. He also added a reference to Hinchcliffe’s weekly podcast, Kill Tony.
“Tony reminds me of Charlie Kirk in that he’s definitely been on camera letting a guy unload in his throat. Oh, you don’t know me? Yeah. Yeah. Kill Tony! Please. Someone f**king kill Tony!” Davidson joked.
The joke stirred a discussion on the internet. The Charlie Kirk Show panel discussed the controversy in the May 11 episode. Andrew Kolvet shared that several media outlets asked for his comment on Pete Davidson’s joke. He added that he found the joke so “distasteful” that he did not even want to reiterate the remark.
However, Blake Neff explained the joke and noted that many in the audience did not like Pete Davidson’s quip. Kolvet chimed in and said:
“I would make two observations. One, this is about somebody who was murdered in really the most grotesque public way imaginable, and he happens to be our close friend… Two, you know, I just don’t think it was funny. And when I saw the clip this morning, my instinct was I just cringed. Because it was kind of in the similar vein that people in the audience did that groan.”
Andrew Kolvet says he was not shocked by Pete Davidson’s joke about Charlie Kirk
Elsewhere in the discussion, the TPUSA spokesperson shared that when Charlie Kirk was “roasted” by South Park, his reaction was, “This is amazing,” and he asked him to “lean in.” Later in the podcast, Kolvet explained that he was not against comedians and said that comedy “can be a really powerful outlet.”
While he strongly objected to Pete Davidson’s joke, Kolvet said it didn’t surprise him.
“Did I like it? No, of course I didn’t. Did I find it distasteful? Of course I found it distasteful. Am I shocked? Not at all. Hollywood is a pretty dark place and they make pretty raunchy, bad, inappropriate jokes. A lot of these guys are just gonna do that,” he commented.
The panel also discussed the other jokes made at Kevin Hart’s Netflix roast. Kolvet compared it to Tom Brady’s roast and said it felt lighter, with everyone “kind of in good spirits.” He added that he found Hart’s roast a “little more vicious,” where jokes were more “cringe-inducing” than funny.
