The Yellowstone universe has always been generous with its body count, and Marshals, the CBS spinoff that turned out to be one of the biggest broadcast hits of 2026, is no different. The show is the most-watched new broadcast series of the year after Stranger Things, according to Nielsen viewership data, and has already been renewed for a second season. But a renewal doesn’t mean everyone gets to come back. With the season 1 finale, Wolves at the Door, set to air on May 24 and promising a really intense cliffhanger, the question of who makes it out of season 1 in one piece is very much on the table. Before the dust settles, here’s a look at the characters whose story may have already run its course.
Characters who may not be there in Marshals Season 2
Garrett
Let’s start with the one who’s already gone. Riley Green’s Garrett arrived with a lot of unresolved trauma and forced both Cal and Kayce to face their shared past in Afghanistan. By episode 11, when Kayce and Cal returned to the hospital to check on him, they found out he had died while they were dealing with Neil on the mountain. His doctor told them that the damage from the fire meant his body wasn’t getting enough oxygen, and the strain on his heart was too much. It was a sad demise, as Andrea and Garrett had only just started dating.
Randall Clegg
Michael Cudlitz’s Randall Clegg has been the season’s big villain. Whether or not Clegg survives the finale is the real question heading into Wolves at the Door. The episode’s logline confirms a militia attack, with Kayce realizing the conspiracy runs deeper than anyone imagined, and Clegg’s fingerprints are all over that kind of operation. If the show wants a clean break going into season 2 with a fresh antagonist, Clegg is the obvious sacrifice.
Harry Gifford
Brett Cullen’s Harry Gifford, the head of Montana’s U.S. Marshals division, is a character with a long and complicated history with the Dutton family. If the finale’s militia storyline starts unraveling the political threads Gifford is tied to, we may never actually get to see him again. However, he could survive and carry that ambiguity into season 2. I guess we’ll know soon.
Maddie
Morgan Lindholm’s Maddie also has a confusing plot. The bartender of the team’s favorite bar and Cal’s daughter, she has been a quiet but significant presence for Cal. A romantic relaionship between her and Miles has also been teased, which means she’s all tangled up with a lot of the characters. If the show deides to put a full sop to Cal’s plotline, chances are that Maddie will also go with that.
