Rapper’s NYC condo renovation allegedly caused catastrophic damage to neighbor’s apartment
A$AP Rocky finds himself at the center of a significant legal dispute involving his $11 million New York City condominium. The renowned rapper, whose legal name is Rakim Athelaston Mayers, faces a lawsuit seeking $1.1 million in damages after a catastrophic flood allegedly caused by negligence during renovation work on his luxury residence.
The legal action names both the hip-hop artist and ADE Pro Painting, a local contractor working on his unit, as responsible parties for the incident that left a neighboring apartment completely uninhabitable. The case highlights the potential consequences of construction mishaps in high-end residential buildings where damages can quickly escalate into seven-figure claims.
Burst pipes create cascading crisis
The incident unfolded on Dec. 23, 2024, when several hot water pipes in and around Rocky’s unit, designated as Unit 5N, suddenly burst during the renovation process. The resulting deluge sent water cascading into the apartment directly below, identified as Unit 4NF, causing immediate and extensive damage throughout the residence.
Court documents obtained by The Independent reveal that the flood rendered the downstairs apartment completely uninhabitable, forcing its residents to vacate their home and seek temporary living arrangements. The lower unit had previously sold for $6.5 million in 2021, reflecting the upscale nature of the building and the significant value at stake in the legal dispute.
Extensive damage assessment
The lawsuit details substantial destruction to the downstairs neighbor’s apartment, with damages to fixtures, furnishings and personal items estimated at a minimum of $700,000. The water intrusion affected virtually every aspect of the living space, requiring comprehensive restoration work that has yet to be completed.
Beyond the physical damage to property and belongings, the residents of Unit 4NF have reportedly spent approximately $200,000 on temporary living arrangements since being displaced by the flood. This additional financial burden reflects the extended timeline required for proper remediation and reconstruction of the damaged space.
Complete reconstruction required
The scope of necessary repairs extends far beyond simple water cleanup and cosmetic fixes. According to the lawsuit, the ceilings, walls, floors and electrical circuitry of Unit 4NF required complete removal and replacement due to the severity of water damage and potential safety hazards created by the flood.
The comprehensive nature of the required reconstruction has contributed to the extended displacement of the unit’s residents. As of the lawsuit filing, the space remains uninhabitable, adding urgency to the legal proceedings as the affected parties seek compensation for ongoing losses.
Contractor claims complications
The owner of ADE Pro Painting, the contractor named in the lawsuit alongside Rocky, has acknowledged the situation while citing limitations on what he can publicly disclose. The contractor indicated that a non-disclosure agreement prevents him from sharing certain details about the renovation project and the circumstances surrounding the pipe failures.
The contractor also expressed that his company has suffered financial consequences from the incident, claiming ADE Pro Painting has not received payment for some services rendered during the project. This additional layer of financial disputes complicates the overall legal situation and suggests potential counterclaims or additional litigation may emerge.
Legal demands and plaintiff claims
The plaintiffs in the case, identified as Kang and Chez Ni LLC, are seeking a minimum of $900,000 in damages from the primary defendants. They additionally request $200,000 from the condominium board and $42,000 for remediation efforts already undertaken, bringing the total claim to $1.1 million.
The inclusion of the condo board in the financial demands suggests potential questions about building oversight, maintenance standards or approval processes for renovation work in the luxury residential tower.
Pattern of property disputes
This lawsuit represents the latest in a series of property-related legal challenges for the rapper. In 2016, Rocky faced legal action from a former landlord who accused him of transforming a custom-made walk-in wardrobe into a recording booth and leaving the apartment in poor condition upon moving out.
Earlier in 2025, the artist was acquitted of felony assault charges related to a shooting incident involving fellow rapper A$AP Relli during a dispute in 2021. While that case involved different circumstances, it demonstrates an ongoing pattern of legal entanglements that have periodically interrupted Rocky’s music career.
The current lawsuit’s outcome could have significant implications for how luxury condominium renovations are managed and who bears responsibility when construction work causes damage to neighboring units.
