The Boys Season 5 has been in discussion not just because of the plot and episodes, but also becuase of its relevance. The fifth season has been compared with The Simpsons for the show’s habbit of predicting something that came to pass. However, in the case of The Boys, the real-world events happened around the time of an episode’s release.
Showrnner Eric Kripke famously addressed this in a The Hollywood Reporter (THR) interview a day before The Boys Season 5 premiere:
“When we were writing [the season] — and I swear I’m not making this up — we genuinely thought it was a little out there, that this is the furthest we were venturing into full-on sci-fi — or at least speculative fiction. And so much of it has come to pass already. It’s really upsetting. I don’t know what else to say about it.”
Now, the sixth episode, “Though the Heavens Fall” also foreshadowed an event that happened just three days later.
The Boys Season 5 Episode 6 brings out Homelander’s golden statue:
For those who don’t know, early this month, a giant 22-foot golden statue of Donald Trump was unvieled at Mar-a-Lago. This week, it seems Evangellical leaders gathered at the resort to bless the statue. This story has the internet opine that this is very similar to Homelander and his side’s attempts to paint him as the God in The Boys Season 5.
In the latest episode of season 5, we see a golden statue of Homelander in a Christ pose. This story has showrunner Eric Kripke in a state of shock as the plotline was written almost an year ago.
The Golden statue plotline is not the only thing that this current season foreshadowed something real:
One of the major developments in the third episode, “Every One of You Sons of Bitches”, has a scene in which Homelander decides that he wants to be the new God after a hallucination of Madelyn Stillwell convinces him to pirsuit divinity. However, just 48 hours before the third episode, Trump riled up the world by posting an AI video of him curing a sick man in a biblical garb.
The message of the video was clear that the current president saw himself as God, just two days before the episode. Which is why a lot of people on the internet drew parallels between Madelyn Stillwell and Homelander in episode 3 and Trump’s AI video. Kripke told Polygon after the third episode:
“I am really tired and weary of the world reflecting the show before we get a chance to do it. I appreciate the marketing. I’m just like, can you just please give us a chance to put some absurd satire out there before you prove that it’s more realistic than we ever intended?”
The showrunner also revealed to TVLine that the plotline of Homelander seeing himself as God was written two whole years ago:
“We wrote this episode two years ago, even before the election. It just came from us talking about where Homelander was moving, and what his sort of final form would be, as he’s been slowly losing his mind over the seasons.”
Therefore, its only accidental that several things from The Boys Season 5 made it into the real world.
