One of the most familiar faces from weekend television, Janai Norman, has made her exit and the abruptness of it has fans rattled. A weekend fixture on Good Morning America for years, Norman left without a proper farewell and the fuller story behind her exit turns out to be about a lot more than a contract dispute.
ABC chose not to renew Norman’s contract despite no performance issues that were cited publicly. According to a source who spoke with People magazine at the time, Norman had actually known since early March that she would not be brought back and then ABC pulled her from air before her contract even officially ended, which was reportedly set for early May. The leak forced a goodbye that nobody had properly planned for.
Two days after the news broke, Norman posted her farewell video. She said she had hoped for more time, that it broke her heart not to be able to say goodbye on air. She also quietly unfollowed the show’s official Instagram account afterward and colleagues rallied around her publicly. Robin Roberts called her a true gem, co-anchors Whit Johnson and Gio Benitez posted their own tributes and viewers, many of them furious at ABC’s decision, flooded the comments telling the network exactly what they thought of losing her.
Speaking to People about her exit, Janai Norman stated,
“I wish I’d had a send-off that honored the connections that I had with so many of my coworkers, and most importantly, the viewers..I loved my time at ABC. It was such a gift. I had so much fun, so many incredible experiences, and it was such a dream come true for me. Because of the way my experience unfolded, viewers were there with me every step of the way.”
The timing was also notable in a broader sense as Norman’s departure arrived just months after ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman left for CBS News. ABC declined to comment on Norman’s situation, and no replacement was immediately announced.
Janai Norman’s career on ABC
Janai Norman first walked into the network as an intern in 2011. She returned to ABC and, in 2019, became the Pop News host for GMA Weekend and three years later, in July 2022, she was elevated to full co-anchor of the weekend.
During her time at GMA, Janai Norman had also been quietly fighting something nobody on the outside could see. In 2022, right around when she got the anchor promotion, her paternal grandmother passed away. She was grieving and, rather than stepping back, she volunteered to cover Hurricane Ian, which killed more than 160 people. Shortly after that, she dealt with mental health issues and received a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.
On May 8, 2026, she announced a memoir titled Breaking, set for release on January 5, 2027 through One World and Penguin Random House. The book covers her mental health journey, her years in broadcast journalism, motherhood, and the long internal work of choosing herself over the version of success that almost consumed her.
