The UFO files are finally out, and the internet has completely lost its mind, but not entirely for the reasons you might expect. On Friday May 8, 2026, the Pentagon released its first batch of declassified government records on unidentified flying objects, and before most people had even finished reading the social media had already crowned one very unexpected winner from the whole situation. Steven Spielberg.
Specifically, his new alien film Disclosure Day, which hits theaters on June 12, 2026, and which is now the most perfectly timed movie in recent Hollywood history whether it planned to be or not. A reply on the official post from Department of War on X, from a user named Jason Krump started a chain of reaction. He wrote simply, “Happiest person about this? Steven Spielberg. His new UFO/Alien movie Disclosure Day opens in June.”
The post went up alongside the official Disclosure Day poster and has since been seen by hundreds of thousands of people. It said out loud what basically everyone was already thinking, and the replies have been going ever since.
The Government actually put out the UFO files today
The release of UFO files, posted on a new Pentagon UFO website, includes 162 files from the FBI, the Department of Defense, NASA, and the State Department. The documents contain eyewitness testimony, photos, and reports of sightings of unexplained objects, detailing incidents stretching back decades from locations all over the world.
The roughly two dozen videos in the first batch show reported sightings from around the world between 2020 and 2026. Most show footage from an infrared camera tracking a white object moving through the air. One report that came with a video taken in Greece in 2023 described an object making multiple 90-degree turns at approximately 80 miles per hour.
Another video in the UFO files shows a football-shaped object in the Indo-Pacific, and a third from Syria shows two semi-transparent, irregularly shaped orange areas that each appear for two seconds before disappearing.
The whole effort has its own official acronym, PURSUE, which stands for Presidential Unsealings and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, and the Pentagon is modelling the release process on something similar to what the Department of Justice did when it started releasing the Epstein Files. Additional documents are expected to be released on a rolling basis, with the Pentagon saying members of the public can draw their own conclusions.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the UFO files have long fueled justified speculation and that it is time for the American people to see for themselves.
Why Spielberg became the face of the whole UFO files moment and what netizens had to say about it?
The reason the Spielberg connection caught fire so quickly comes down to something he said at CinemaCon in April. Standing in front of an audience to present footage from Disclosure Day, Spielberg told the room that there is more truth than fiction in what people are going to see on June 12.
That comment raised a lot of eyebrows at the time, and now, with the UFO files dropping just weeks before his film opens, it has taken on a whole new layer of meaning in the public imagination. Right now, social media is flooded with comments.

None of that is connected to the real UFO files in any factual way; it is a work of fiction, but the cultural overlap between a real government disclosure moment and a big-budget alien movie opening five weeks later is simply too much for the internet to ignore.
At CinemaCon, Spielberg told the audience that all you need to get from the beginning to the end of Disclosure Day is a seatbelt. The memes, meanwhile, are only going to get louder between now and June 12.
