The film stars Austin Abrams in the lead role as Bryan, alongside Paul Walter Hauser as Carl, Zach Cherry as Dave, Kali Reis as Pauline, and Johnno Wilson as Max. It is a lean, focused ensemble, no sprawling ensemble cast of returning franchise faces, no cameo winks to previous films.

A bidding war between four major studios took place for distribution rights, including Warner Bros. Pictures and Netflix, before Sony Pictures’ Columbia Pictures ultimately won the deal in March 2025. The film carries a budget of $80 million, making it the most expensive project Cregger has directed to date, over twice the budget of his previous feature, Weapons.

One of the most talked about aspects of Resident Evil 2026 is how Cregger has refused to retread any of the past materials. He confirmed in 2025 that the film would not feature characters from the games, explaining his belief that fans already have those stories told in the games themselves and that the film should carve its own identity within that world. as he told Games Radar+,

“Leon exists in the games. I don’t want anyone to ruin that for me. I figure if I am honoring the games, I’m just going to tell another story that feels like playing in the world of the game, but I’m not stepping on the toes of any of Leon’s storyline. I’m not recasting Leon, god forbid.”

The first trailer for the film shows Abrams’ Bryan running through a house, the sewers, snow, and a road as blood splashes all over him. He is also seen loading a shotgun as the city falls apart around him and he faces a mysterious obese figure sitting in the sewers.

The official description for the film reads,

In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

Resident Evil 2026 will release in theaters on 18 September, 2026.
