”What if One Night could change everything?”- that’s the question Universal Pictures’ upcoming romantic comedy film One Night Only poses in its recently unveiled trailer. The highly-anticipated Will Gluck-written and directed film, starring Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) and Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), is scheduled to arrive in theatres on August 7.
The recently released trailer introduces Allie (Barbaro) and Owen (Turner), two love-starved strangers who are out on the ‘least romantic night of the year’ in a fictionalized New York City. The official logline for One Night Only states its crazy ‘one night’ only rule:
”Allie and Owen, two love-starved strangers crash into each other in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have s*x.”
More on this in our story.
One Night Only trailer: Two strangers and one unromantic night
The One Night Only trailer begins with Allie sneaking into Owen’s pizzeria late at night, claiming that she knows the owner. This begins a string of confessions about food and s*x as the couple enjoys hearty laughs and pizza in the diner. The trailer then rewinds to a few hours earlier, reintroducing Allie and Owen as two love-starved single people who are desperately seeking love on the most ‘unromantic’ night in New York City, where single people are allowed to have s*x legally.
While recently dumped, Owen is encouraged by his mother to go out, hopeless romantic Allie is out with her friend, who ditches her when she finds a guy in the ‘bathroom line.’ The depressed single strangers come across a series of frantic New Yorkers making the best use of this special night as the One Night Only trailer continues. Allie and Owen keep bumping into happy couples in restaurants and on the subway until they cross paths and everything changes for the better.
Since both Allie and Owen are on the hunt for something special and more than just a quick encounter, they feel a spark but a series of missteps and side quests keep them apart until they are reunited and the One Night Only trailer poses an important question:
”What would you do if you only had one night?”
The trailer ends with a series of quick-panning montages that mimic Allie and Owen’s limited time. While the strangers race to find their way towards each other, the crazy New York night keeps them apart, giving them space and time to think about their priorities. The trailer cuts to black as Allie and Owen are confronted with the possibility of a real future, making this one night feel weighted and consequential.
