The newest episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is out, and it includes one of the most-discussed deaths of the season. Social media has been alive with discussions about this death ever since it occurred. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 7, titled “The Hateful Darkness,” was released on Disney+ on April 28, 2026, confirming what most fans had dreaded: the death of Daniel Blake.
One of the low-key breakout actors of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Michael Gandolfini, is gone from the show and has had one of the most emotional goodbyes that the show has created.
Thus, the question has been asked and answered. Daniel dies in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Buck tortures Daniel and then kills him when he is no longer useful to Buck. The final shot of the episode shows Daniel lying on the floor, bleeding to death. There is no chance that the last scene was a dream or a cliffhanger. Daniel Blake is dead.
This character died in a Marvel-type death, but it is more painful, mainly due to the previous events that Daniel experienced up until this point. Daniel had been working towards a crossroads of multiple options the entire season, and when he finally reached his crossroads, he chose to take the more difficult and correct path; he died. He most likely knew the results of his choice.
What actually happened to Daniel in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 7?
Earlier in the episode, Daniel and BB Urich were on Staten Island for his birthday when he discovered definitively that she had been the mole leaking information about the mayor’s office. That discovery put both of them in an impossible position. Daniel’s job, handed to him by Buck Cashman, Wilson Fisk’s hired hitman, was to bring BB in so she could be dealt with. And for a while, it seemed like that was exactly what he was going to do.
He drove BB toward Buck’s location, and she worked out what was happening, begging him not to let her die. Something shifted in him at that moment. He returned her phone, gave her the information she needed to expose everything about Fisk, and told her to run. Then he went upstairs to face Buck alone, giving her time to get away.
He appears to have thought that there may be some way out of this situation, that Buck, someone he spent time with as well as considered a type of friend, may be willing to hear him out. He was wrong about both counts. Buck tortured him and killed him once it became obvious that Daniel had nothing left to provide.
The assassin spent considerable time working to infiltrate Daniel’s personal life, gathering information about the people he cared for as a type of insurance policy. So if in the future, when Daniel became an issue, those people could be used against him. Ultimately, none of that mattered because in the end.
What has Michael Gandolfini said about his character’s death in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?
The actor discussed the process of how the ending developed, and it wasn’t always planned as shown. In an interview with TV Insider, Gandolfini stated that originally, Daniel was not scripted to die in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, but that the creative team came back to him later and informed him of their intention of killing off his character. He stated that if he were not in agreement with the decision, he would have gone against it, but his reaction shows how well he bought into it after believing it was the right thing to do.
According to him, typically, characters without superpowers, in shows like this, have very little purpose other than being support characters to superpowered ones. They normally do not get to have full story arcs. Gandolfini said that he felt very lucky getting this opportunity to play Daniel, who had a complete, meaningful story and a proper ending.
As far as stories go, Daniel’s death represents something larger in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 as well. Daniel has been set up quietly during the season as an heir to Fisk’s crime empire because he had the potential to take over the Kingpin’s legacy at some point. Daniel’s choice not to take that role at the end of his life tells us a lot about what direction Fisk’s rule is taking. A man who leaves no worthy heir to his throne means that the rule stops with him.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 wraps up with its season finale on May 5, 2026.
