What happens to Adam? Explained

All six episodes of Unchosen were released on Netflix on April 21, 2026, and while the show began with Adam being a controlling and abusive husband to Rosie, it ended with Adam emerging as a different person. The show follows Rosie (played by Molly Windsor) and Adam (played by Asa Butterfield), a married couple with a daughter, who are members of a religious cult called Fellowship of the Divine. Their lives change drastically after Sam (played by Fra Fee), an escaped convict posing as a stranger in need of help, comes into their lives.

While the show ends with Rosie and Grace managing to escape and finding a new home with other cult members who had escaped in the past, Adam isn’t as lucky. He doesn’t escape, his own beliefs trapping him and keeping him in the cult. Here’s exactly what happened.

What happens to Adam in Unchosen?

Unchosen ends with Rosie finally having the courage to escape the cult with her daughter. Since divorce isn’t permitted in their community at all, Rosie has no other option but to escape, and she finally admits to Adam that she has been sleeping with Sam. While Adam is shocked and angry, he cannot treat Rosie badly since he himself has been exploring his s*xuality with Sam. He still might have reacted violently if Rosie hadn’t revealed that Sam had threatened to hurt their daughter, Grace.

Ridden with guilt about everything he has done so far, Adam takes this moment to do one right thing. He drives Rosie and Grace, helping them escape, but a tree falls on the road, stopping them. By that time, Sam arrives as well and stops Rosie and Grace from leaving because he cannot fathom losing them. Adam fights Sam as Rosie and Grace escape into the woods, but Sam eventually fights off Adam and follows them.

By the time Adam catches up to them, Sam has already attempted to drown Rosie, realizing he shouldn’t kill the person he loves again, allowing Rosie and Grace to finally escape. Adam then points a gun at Sam, who tries to manipulate Adam and challenges him to call the police to serve justice instead of just killing Sam in cold blood. He tosses a phone to Adam, and before Adam can call anyone, he sees that the phone is playing a video of Adam and Sam in a s*xual encounter.

Homos*xuality is a sin in the cult, and Adam knows that the revelation of his hidden s*xuality would have serious consequences for him. He thus cannot call the police or tell anyone about what Sam has done since it will put him at risk, too. Adam thus doesn’t tell anyone about Sam’s past or actions, and doesn’t escape the cult either. A year later, Sam is the head of the community, and we don’t see Adam.

Asa Butterfield, who plays Adam in Unchosen, said to Tudum by Netflix,

“I would hope that he could find the strength to leave [the cult], but I think he’s still got a journey ahead of him, an internal journey to really confront his own truth, to confront the loss of his family, to confront Sam,”

He continued,

“It’s so deeply ingrained in him, this life and this world. Unlike Rosie, who needs the change and who’s seen the chance to change, I don’t think Adam’s really opened his eyes to that yet.”

Adam is still part of the cult, but is most probably still reeling from the loss of his family and the guilt of his actions. He still isn’t ready to accept himself and stand up for himself. Thus, at the end of Unchosen, Adam is still trapped, but perhaps knowing he saved his family is his only consolation for now.
