Euphoria Season 3’s episode 3 is all about Nate and Cassie’s wedding, and while the first half of it goes relatively well, it all falls apart at the end. As Cassie and Nate are enjoying the toasts by family members, Naz, who Nate owes $600,000, shows up at the wedding and quietly threatens the couple.
This sets off a series of reactions, which leads to the episode ending with Nate getting beaten up badly. The way Euphoria Season 3’s wedding episode unfolds makes one think the show tried to recreate its own version of Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding. Here is what we think.
How Euphoria Season 3 creates its own version of Game of Thrones‘ Red Wedding
In Game of Thrones Season 3, episode 9, Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, his pregnant wife Talisa, and their Northern army were brutally murdered by Walder Frey, Roose Bolton, and the Lannisters because Robb broke his marriage pact with House Frey, and there was a strategic need to end his rebellion and solidify the Lannister control over the North. While no one is killed in Euphoria Season 3, the show has its own version of a bloody wedding.
Euphoria Season 3 episode 3 begins with giving us a look at how Jules became a sugar baby and then shifts to Cassie and Nate’s wedding. Maddy and Jules (who was Rue’s plus one) show up at the wedding looking their best, and it is the first time in Euphoria Season 3 that all the characters of the show have been together at the same place since high school. Nate initially has cold feet, but makes it to the wedding ceremony, and Cassie walks down the aisle to him, and they get married.
Cal and Marsha give their toasts, congratulating the newlyweds (Marsha makes sure to indirectly throw Maddy shade). Everything seems fine until Naz shows up. He shows up at the bride and groom’s table, which also seats the bridesmaids and groomsmen. He congratulates the couple, too, but then confronts Nate about the money he owes him. Cassie is confused and gradually getting scared. This is her wedding day, the one day she needs to be ‘perfect,’ and Nate’s mistakes have messed that up.
While Naz doesn’t create too much drama at the wedding, Cassie and Nate’s friends can tell that Nate owes someone a lot of money, and the entire situation becomes extremely embarrassing for the newlyweds. In case you thought the couple couldn’t embarrass themselves anymore, Cassie and Nate perform an extremely s*xual dance number for their first dance number. Throughout the performance, despite Nate’s reassurance, Cassie is freaking out, and her first concern isn’t Nate’s safety or struggles, but that she can’t be poor at any cost.
It seems like the money problem will be handled later on in Euphoria Season 3, and the couple heads to their home for their wedding night. But as Cassie and Nate enter their mansion, and the lights are turned on, we see Naz waiting in the living room. One of his employees beats up Nate badly, punching him constantly, even pulling him down the stairs as he tries to go up. Cassie tries to stop the man once, but is pushed by him and hits the floor, which causes her nose to bleed. That is when she loses it.
Cassie begins wailing like a child, not out of her concern for her husband, but because her wedding night is ruined. She says,
“I’m bleeding. This is my wedding night.”
all while crying. She also says,
“This is so unfair!”
Followed by:
“It was supposed to be the best day of my life.”
As Nate struggles to fight for his life, Cassie is dumbfounded and asks,
“What is happening right now?”
Naz then walks up to where Nate is struggling on the ground, and as his employee holds up one of Nate’s naked feet, Naz cuts off one of his toes, and Nate bleeds profusely. Cassie is horrified, and before leaving, Naz tells her,
“You know Cassie some women inherit wealth. But others, inherit debt.”
This is a chilling line because it could mean that if Nate is ultimately unable to pay Naz back, Cassie would be the one who would have to pay it. She doesn’t have money, and given how much Euphoria Season 3 has included s*x work and OnlyF*ns in its story, we might just see Cassie having to engage in s*x work to pay off Nate’s debt.
Throughout the entire time Nate gets beaten up, Cassie’s expectation of having a picture-perfect life is what is more important to her than her husband. Instead of trying to save him or get help, she just cries and expresses how her perfect wedding might be ruined.
What happened in Euphoria Season 3 doesn’t equal the bloodbath that occurred in Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding. However, through Nate and Cassie’s wedding day ending the way it did, we can tell that their marriage is doomed, and their lives aren’t heading to happy times anytime soon.
It is perhaps the beginning of the end for them, and while death came immediately for the Starks and the Northern army, the end for Nate and Cassie would be much more gradual. The bloodbath in the Euphoria Season 3 episode 3 was just the beginning.
