Mary Ann Murphy was found in her bedroom, and she had been brutally stabbed. The investigators were informed through a 911 call. Kerri Murphy, the then 16-year-old daughter, frantically dialed 911 to inform them that there had been a break-in and someone had tried to harm her mother. She explained how she managed to run away after she heard her mother’s scream.

When the investigators arrived, they found Mary Ann Murphy’s body in her bedroom. She has been stabbed multiple times and was apparently killed in her sleep. During the initial stage of investigation, the suspect list was limited, and the cops singled out Kerri’s male classmate Zain Ahmed (Kerri’s apparent stalker). However, soon the investigators found out that Zain was innocent. His family noted that he was at home playing video games during the time of the murder.

As shown in Dateline: Down the Rabbit Hole, the investigators now shifted their suspicion to Kerri Murphy, Mary’s teenage daughter. The investigators found some suspicious call logs on her phone. They found out that she was barred from speaking with her girlfriend, Rebecca (then twenty years old), after her father spotted them together. When Kerri was grounded, Rebecca gave her a cell phone to remain connected. Through the recorded phone calls, the investigators found enough evidence that proved that it was Rebecca who killed Mary Ann Murphy on July 16, 2012. Turns out, they plotted to kill Mary because she was against their relationship. Previously, Mary had called the cops and pressed trespassing charges against Rebecca Keller on March 16.

Both Rebecca and Kerri were arrested on October 12, 2012. According to Chron, on October 29, 2012, Rebecca Keller was charged with the first-degree murder of Mary Ann Murphy. She was also charged with a se**al assault case for being se**ally involved with Kerri, who was underage in 2012. Rebecca pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Kerri was offered a plea deal and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
