If Wishes Could Kill on Netflix narrates a horror story connected with an app. The app, called Girigo, was first created in 2005 and was harmless until it became cursed with the deaths of several high school students.
The series further showed how Se-ah and her friends’ lives were destroyed when they used the app. While Ha-sal helped them get rid of the curse, the end credits of the horror K-drama suggested something more sinister.
More on this in our story.
If Wishes Could Kill: Si-won created the Girigo app
The story of the Girigo app in If Wishes Could Kill, which wreaked havoc in the lives of several high school students, began in 2005. Hye-rung and Si-won were best friends, but Si-won’s life in school was different, which she liked to keep separate.
The main reason behind this was Si-won’s mother being a shaman, who was known around the town as the woman who killed her husband. As she was ashamed of her mother, she never revealed to her friends, and they kept thinking that Hye-rung was the daughter of the shaman.
While making fun of her, they brainstormed the idea of creating an app around shamanism. Si-won initially rejected it, but while talking to Hye-rung, she got the idea of the wish-fulfilling app, the logo of which was drawn by Hye-rung. The app that Si-won created had the server in the school, which is why Ha-joon and Se-ah were able to find all the wish videos stored in the school computer.
If Wishes Could Kill: How did the app get cursed? Details explored
As the show progressed, Si-won and Hye-rung’s friendship also began to fade due to Hye-rung’s connection with Si-won’s mother. It got so bad that one day, Si-won destroyed the place where her mother performed the rituals, which caused her mother’s death.
However, she had tasked Hye-rung to hide a talisman in Si-won’s bag, but she failed as Si-won caught her before that. To take revenge, Si-won broadcast Hye-rung’s video where she confessed to liking Gi-tae, embarrassing her in front of everyone in her school. This enraged Hye-rung, and she performed a version of Korean voodoo magic on Si-won and Gi-tae, Hye-rung’s crush.
She was the first person to record her wish on the Girigo app. She wished for all of Si-won and her friends to die and killed herself after it, sacrificing her life to start the voodoo magic. However, since Gi-tae and Si-won died right after, her curse should have ended, but it didn’t, only because of Si-won.
Before dying, Si-won wrote her saju (full name and birthdate) with her blood and recorded her wish on the app. She wished for Hye-rung’s curse to last forever. As a result, whoever used the Girigo app ended up dying, until Se-ah and Ha-sal ended the curse.
However, while the duo ended Hye-rung and Si-won’s curse, in the end, Na-ri was left inside the cursed realm. The end credits showed that her phone still had the app installed, which Hyeong-wook’s Discord friend Min-soo gets a hold of, hinting that the curse might return with Na-ri being the perpetrator now.
