Running Point Season 2 is finally streaming on Netflix. Much of the excitement for the second chapter of Mindy Kaling’s sports comedy series centers around a fresh face stepping into the chaos: Coach Norm Stinson. Played by beloved comedian and actor Ray Romano, the character promises to shake up the dynamics of the LA Waves in ways fans didn’t see coming. Romano’s casting hints at a role that blends sharp wit with unexpected depth.
Running Point Season 2 marks the return of Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon, the former party girl-turned-President of her family’s pro basketball team. While Isla managed to revive the Waves in the freshman season, the unexpected arrival of her eldest brother Cam threatens her survival in the latest season. Additionally, after the Season 1 finale saw the Waves’ coach, Jay, step away to move to Boston, the team was in dire need of a new coach.
As Isla struggles to keep her job, she turns to Jay’s mentor Coach Norm Stinson who coached the Waves years ago.
More on this in our story.
Running Point Season 2: Who is Coach Norm Stinson?
As seen in the Running Point Season 1 finale, the Waves were without a head coach. After Jay expressed his desire to move to Boston to be closer to his daughters, Isla made the difficult decision to end his contract three years earlier, much to Sandy and Ness’ disappointment. While Isla and Jay grew close in the freshman season, which resulted in their game-changing kiss in the Season 1 finale, the Waves needed a new coach in the latest season.
As Cam’s return threatened Isla’s survival as the Waves’ President in Running Point Season 2, she set out to find a new coach for the team. While Cam suggested hiring hotshot Danny Pierce for the coaching spot, Isla was not confident about him and instead turned to Jay’s mentor and one of the Waves’ former coaches. Isla dodged a bullet by hiring Coach Norm Stinson for her team over Danny, as the latter was planted by Cam to sabotage Isla’s plans of leading the team to victory.
While Coach Norm Stinson was a perfect fit for the Waves in Running Point Season 2, he had his fair share of problems before he found his footing. Not only was Norm Stinson out of the game for a while but he also had problems with the team’s star player. Since Marcus was feeling insecure about his game and the arrival of better players on the team, Norm Stinson’s methods did not sit right with him.
Norm’s character arc drives much of Season 2’s drama but he eventually found his rightful place with the team.
