Hautetalk: Why Euphoria S3’s Obsession With Sexualizing It’s Female Characters Is Problematic?

Euphoria features a lot of explicit and graphic content across all of its seasons.

Hautetalk: Why Euphoria S3’s Obsession With Sexualizing It’s Female Characters Is Problematic?

As Euphoria’s season 3 arrived, we found ourselves wondering how we went from admiring its season 1’s aesthetic, makeup, songs, and direction to cringing at it. Don’t get us wrong, all these things are still better in the current season, it is the overs*xualization of its female characters that we have a problem with. It was the same in its debut season as well, especially with Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie, however, it seems that the s*xualization has peaked in the following season and it only serves the male gaze.

Euphoria’s Overs*xualisation Is Problematic

Euphoria’s season one showed us complex characters and a storyline that most people related to. From showing Rue relationship with drugs to Cassie’s problem with finding self-worth, people appreciated its storyline and found some substance in it. However, the problem with the over-s*xualisation of the characters persisted even then. It seems that instead of solving this problem, the same has worsened in seasons 2 and 3. Do we really need to show naked bodies when there is absolutely no need? Was there a need to show Rue and Faye struggling to swallow the drugs sealed in plastic in the first episode of the new season? We don’t think so. Sure, Sam Levinson is trying to show the complicated relationships and things that probably happen in real life, but why so much nudity and graphic content?

S*xualisation Catered To Male Gaze

The problem with Euphoria is that the s*xualisations of women seem to cater to the male gaze. In the latest season, we saw a scene between Cassie and Nate where she is dressed as a dog. The issue isn’t with the power play or having a kink. But with Cassie, it appears as if it’s not her conscious fantasy, as her kink comes mostly from having low self-worth or going with whatever her man wants.

The bottom line is that the show doesn’t need to show a lot of s*xualization and graphic content because after that point, the show only becomes all about that. We hope that as season 3 progresses, we get to see Cassie’s character arc and more substance in the storyline.
