Who is Garrett in the Yellowstone spin-off? All about country music singer Riley Green’s debut role

In the world of Marshals, Garrett is a key figure who is introduced as someone who already has a close bond with Kayce Dutton. And if you’re wondering how they met, then their connection goes back to the time when these two were serving in the Navy SEALs along with another teammate named Cal.

When Garrett comes to Kayce’s ranch, it doesn’t feel like a random visit from an old friend but hints at something unresolved from the past. From the outside, Gerrett looks like an easygoing personality with a guitar and a relaxed attitude.

However, he’s actually struggling with the aftermath of the war and the experience he had just like Kayce. This way, an unspoken understanding is created between them in the Yellowstone spin-off series. It means that Kayce understands what Gerrett has faced as he faced a similar time.

Fans of Yellowstone must have enjoyed Marshals and among the characters who caught everyone’s attention is Garrett. What’s intriguing is that Garrett in the spin-off is brought to life by Riley Green, a well-known country artist stepping into acting for the first time.

He comes from Jacksonville, Alabama and built his reputation through songs like I Wish Grandpas Never Died and There Was This Girl, along with collaborations such as Different ‘Round Here. His music career has already earned him recognition, including the ACM New Male Artist of the Year award.

And then, Riley Green’s path to the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals wasn’t accidental. His real-life friendship with the series’ main cast member, Luke Grimes, played a big role. The friends wrote songs together and Grimes eventually encouraged Green to step into acting and give an audition for the show.

Instead of simply bringing his own personality in Marshals, Green made a deliberate effort to fully step into Garrett’s identity. During an interview with TVLine, the actor shared::

“I’ve filmed some music videos, but there was no dialogue. This was real acting, and I’m so glad. I didn’t want to tiptoe into this world where I show up as a country singer and play a song.”

Green continued:

“I wanted it to be a real role, and man, what an awesome place to start in the acting world on a show like this.”

The role of Garrett pushed Riley Green beyond what he was used to. Acting required a lot of things, but the singer enjoyed it all.

The character Garrett isn’t always a serious man. There’s a version of himself where people can see him acting more casual. In one of the scenes in Marshals, he takes a humorous dig at Alabama saying:

“The only good thing to come out of there is the I-20.”

It sounds like a random, slightly sarcastic comment, but it fits the scene. Later, Riley Green explained that this line was only part of the script and not his real opinion, since he is actually proud of being from Alabama.

Music is a big part of Garrett’s life as he sings in the series and later mentions that it is the only way he finds escape. Instead of directly showing how he feels, Garrett uses music to express himself.
