When did Jennifer Hudson participate in American Idol? Songstress speaks candidly about “insane” full circle moment of returning as a judge

Jennifer Hudson is an American singer, actress, producer, and talk show host. Several of her past performances and the Jennifer Hudson Show’s ‘spirit tunnels’ have taken the internet by storm, although some may not be familiar with the fact that she got her beginnings as an American Idol contestant in 2004.

In the latest news about the Dreamgirls star, Jennifer Hudson returned to American Idol as a guest judge for the episode that aired on April 20 to a glowing response. The multi-talented performer shared her experience in an exclusive interview with E! News at the filming of Netflix’s The 51st AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Eddie Murphy.

“To be on the other side of everything is insane, but it puts how much time has passed into perspective. I’m like, ‘Wow. Idol was 22 years ago. Dreamgirls was 20 years ago.’”

She then added that being this far removed from her early successes allows her to now revisit it with a wholly different perspective.

OK, yes, I can return as a judge or mentor on Idol and then be on the production side of Dreamgirls to see someone else get a chance.”

This is the second time Jennifer Hudson has returned to American Idol, with the first instance being alongside Iggy Azalea, when the duo performed “Trouble” in 2015.

Jennifer Hudson announces she is joining the producing team on the Broadway revival of Dreamgirls

Interestingly, it was reported by Deadline in February that Jennifer Hudson would be joining the production team tasked with the Dreamgirls Broadway revival set for Fall 2026. In another full-circle moment for the entertainment mogul, her role in the production comes 22 years after her Academy Award-winning portrayal in the 2006 film adaptation.

At the time, Hudson shared the following statement,

“Twenty years ago, my life changed forever because of a film called Dreamgirls. Inspired by the iconic stage musical, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to portray the one and only Effie White – a woman whose story and voice remain an ever-present force in my life.”

It continues,

“I am beyond honored to join the extraordinary producing team behind this special, newly reimagined Broadway revival, and to help bring Dreamgirls back to the stage through the visionary direction and choreography of Camille A. Brown. This fall cannot come soon enough.”

Jennifer Hudson is highly regarded as an EGOT winner and natural talent who has come to embrace a new perspective while continuing to move forward and build her space in the industry.
