Jim Parsons has once again found himself at the center of renewed discussion around The Big Bang Theory, as talk of a possible reboot continues to circulate. How would it even exist without Sheldon Cooper?! Most importantly, would Jim Parsons ever be willing to step back into the role that became a defining feature of sitcom TV for much of the last decade or more?!
Such questions always resurface from time to time, as people reflect on the show and its legacy and wonder about what possible shape its universe could take on again. But now, Jim Parsons has been direct, and his statements really leave little room for any expectations.
Jim Parsons says he would not return as Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory
Recent interviews given by the actor make it clear that he does not foresee reprising his role as Sheldon Cooper if a reboot of The Big Bang Theory were ever made.
According to E News on the April 17 episode of The View, Jim Parsons stated,
“I don’t believe I would do a reboot, I can’t say I miss him, partly because—especially 12 years on a TV show where they’re writing for this specific actor—there’s a lot of me in that. Not the genius part, but there’s a lot of me in that.”
This is really just in line with much of what he had to say about the character and show in recent years. The man clearly cannot see himself slipping back into the shoes of the theoretical physicist, even in hypothetical conversations.
At the same time, though, Jim Parsons framed his response in terms of what he had thought and said,
“There’s a lot about his qualities and just who he was that I still carry with me. The longer it goes on, I’m more and more surprised when people approach me about it. Not because I’m stupid, but because I’m like, oh, it makes sense, but I’m just not thinking about it.”
Why Jim Parsons is not inclined to revisit Sheldon
Jim Parsons clearly stated in the interviews that he would not want to reprise Sheldon in the case of a reboot going ahead. It seems as though he is ready for a close to his Sheldon character because after so many years playing it from a young age.
Jim Parsons said that he had dedicated 12 years of his life to playing the role of Sheldon Cooper, and he called that an incredibly long time to dedicate to a creative position. But as The Big Bang Theory came to an end in 2019, he decided that the conclusion was the ending of the journey, and it was time to say goodbye to the role.
It did take a while to come to terms with the idea that he would never be playing Sheldon again after that, but when the last episode was nearing the screen, Jim Parsons looked ready to let both Sheldon Cooper and The Big Bang Theory completely go. This was not because of resentment towards the character or the show ending too soon, but because that was simply the time to end The Big Bang Theory from both Jim Parsons’ and Sheldon’s point of view.
The end of The Big Bang Theory and Jim Parsons
After the end of the 12th series was screened, Jim Parsons said he did not wish to continue playing the role of Sheldon Cooper any further, and it is that very decision that is thought to have been the final straw for producers and writers deciding to call an end to the series.
The decision did not appear to have come completely instantaneously; however, he looked as though he was ready.
Jim Parsons’ statements on a reboot of The Big Bang Theory
Throughout the interview, there was no evidence suggesting he is supporting it; according to Yahoo News, the only thing the actor has ever said on the matter is,
“The longer it goes on, I’m more and more surprised when people approach me about it, not because I’m stupid, but because I’m like, oh, it makes sense, but I’m just not thinking it. But it’s always really sweet.”
It is also worth noting that Jim Parsons hasn’t completely closed off the idea, but the reboot might not be as unlikely as we thought, although as of now, he does not envision himself in the role again.
The reason Jim Parsons has moved on from Sheldon Cooper
In addition to working on The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons has been working on a multitude of projects in film, television, theatre, and production. These efforts have occurred largely through his own production company.
This decision is somewhat of a mirror image of Jim Parsons’ generally creative intent and a way for him to not have the single, dominant image of a highly popular, long-running sitcom character attached to his persona. His post-sitcom existence has been characterized by acting, along with producing.
This likely is the overarching motivation for why Jim Parsons consistently stated he had no interest in returning to his role of Sheldon Cooper.
The legacy of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory
Sheldon Cooper is, and after all of this time, always will be an iconic face in television, and that is entirely unsurprising as long as we factor in the performance that Jim Parsons gave in his role.
The character, the distinctive sense of humor, and all the particular oddities that Sheldon Cooper possessed have forever become entwined with the character of Jim Parsons over his decade-long time on the show. The success that character and Jim Parsons himself enjoyed has always led to ideas of reboots, naturally beginning with Parsons’s return to play the character of Sheldon Cooper, and for all fans of The Big Bang Theory, it feels as though no other will be good enough for them.
Will Jim Parsons ever change his mind about the role in the future?
With Parsons, his refusal to play Sheldon Cooper has remained firm so far as anything he has publicly said is concerned. Whether or not he will reprise the role of Sheldon Cooper for a The Big Bang Theory reboot relies entirely upon the mindset that Jim Parsons holds for himself at present.
And at present, we have absolutely no evidence that he has even got the slightest bit of inclination to return to the role. He is keen to move on and find new projects as opposed to going back over old work.
Based on all of these factors, there is nothing to imply that Jim Parsons will be returning as Sheldon Cooper in a future reboot of The Big Bang Theory; what he has said on the matter has now seemed to express that he is ready to bring Sheldon Cooper’s character to a close whilst also making sure he is acknowledging the role that the character gave him throughout his career.
Fans can speculate for as long as they like about the prospect of a future reboot, while Jim Parsons consistently remains firm with his very straightforward answer.
For the foreseeable future, at least, there is little to no chance of seeing Jim Parsons step back into the shoes of Sheldon Cooper, and the iconic role will forever be associated with Jim Parsons.
