The first trailer of Practical Magic‘s sequel, Practical Magic 2, has been released, and it teases us about the upcoming sequel. The trailer not only gives us a glimpse into the Owens from the upcoming film but also includes plenty of Easter eggs referencing the first film.
In many ways, the trailer also makes the upcoming sequel even better, even though the film has yet to be released. It tells us just enough without spoiling the plot of the film, but gives enough references to refresh fans on what happened in the first film. Here are 5 key takeaways from the Practical Magic 2 trailer, which teases that the film is going to be a great sequel.
5 key takeaways from the Practical Magic 2 trailer
While the trailer was entertaining and gave hints of something dark looming over the Owens family, here are 5 key takeaways that make the sequel an even better one:
1. The introduction
The Practical Magic 2 teaser trailer opens with Sally Owens (played by Sandra Bullock) saying,
“I’m sure you’ve heard of the Owens family. The ones from Massachusetts. The ones their neighbors whisper are witches.”
It refreshes the minds of the fans who might have watched the 1998 film years ago and do not remember everything. Moreover, it just adds to the overall nostalgic tone the trailer embodies.
2. Gillian is on Tinder
As the trailer continues, Sally and Gillian (played by Nicole Kidman) introduce themselves to a new character played by Lee Pace. They tell him how everyone they love dies a gruesome death. This is again a great way the trailer refers to the main conflict of the first film, which revealed that any man that an Owens woman loves dies. In the first film, Gillian’s abusive boyfriend died, and his spirit terrorized the Owens family.
In the present time, as Sally and Gillian mention their curse to this new character, Gillian adds how the ‘anyone we love dies’ thing is
“not great for the Tinder bio.”
It is a hilarious detail the show revealed, given that the Owens sisters know that their falling in love is dangerous for the men they fall for. Also, since Practical Magic 2 is set twenty-five years after the first film, it makes sense that Gillian has caught up with the times and is now on Tinder.
3. Maise Williams and Joey King’s characters in Practical Magic 2 are witches
Available information about the show so far reveals that Joey King is playing a grown-up Kylie Owens, Sally’s elder daughter, in Practical Magic 2. What character Maisie Williams plays is yet to be revealed, but she is related to the Owens, as we see both Williams’ character and King’s Kylie arrive at the Owens house and get welcomed by Sally and Gillian’s aunts, Bridget and Frances.
Later on, the trailer also reveals that the two young women are also witches as they jump off the roof of a building with Gillian and Sally holding umbrellas (which they hold to fly using their powers) with Gillian saying,
“I’ve waited such a long time for this.”
4. Reference to Jimmy
In one scene of the trailer, we see Gillian, Sally, and Lee Pace’s character on a bus, heading somewhere. They seem to be going somewhere to solve a problem, and Gillian says,
“Everything’s going to be okay.”
To that, Sally asks,
“‘Everything’s going to be okay?’ Just like when we had to bury a corpse under a rosebush? That kind of fine or different? Different, or same?”
That is a direct reference to Gillian and Sally, having to bury Gillian’s boyfriend Jimmy in their garden after Sally killed him, first accidentally, and the second time after resurrecting him, to protect Gillian from his attack. That incident led to all the chaos of the first film, with Jimmy’s spirit wreaking havoc in their lives.
5. Midnight Margarita reference
The Practical Magic 2 trailer includes a very obvious reference to the Midnight Margaritas scene from the first film through its background music. Harry Nilsson’s song, Coconut, plays for the major part of the trailer as its background score. It is the same song to which Sally, Gillian, Bridget, and Frances danced in the kitchen while drinking Midnight Margaritas after Sally and Gillian buried Jimmy’s body in the garden. The trailer’s background score is thus a direct reference to that memorable scene from the first film.
Practical Magic 2 stars Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens, Nicole Kidman as Gillian Owens, Stockard Channing as Frances Owens, Dianne Wiest as Bridget Owens, and Joey King as Kylie Owens. Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod star in unspecified roles. The film is directed by Susanne Bier and written by Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett. Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and Denise Di Novi are the producers. The production companies behind the film are Alcon Entertainment, Di Novi Pictures, Fortis Films, and Blossom Films.
Practical Magic 2 will be released in theaters on September 11, 2026.
