Georgia wide receiver Zachariah Branch faces an unwanted distraction at the worst possible moment in his football career. The projected Day 2 NFL Draft pick was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning on misdemeanor charges, just days before the 2026 draft is set to begin on Thursday.
The arrest and what is known
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Athens-Clarke County police arrested Branch on charges of obstructing public sidewalks and streets, prowling and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He was booked into the Clarke County Jail at 1:26 a.m. Sunday and released roughly two and a half hours later at 3:44 a.m. The charges are misdemeanor-level offenses, though the timing of the arrest — less than a week before NFL teams finalize their draft boards — introduces a layer of uncertainty around where Branch ultimately lands in the draft.
A prospect with an impressive résumé
The arrest is a notable development for a player who entered this draft cycle with considerable momentum. Branch arrived at college football as the No. 1 wide receiver recruit in the country, beginning his career at USC in 2023 before transferring to Georgia ahead of last season. His two-year college résumé built a compelling case for early-round consideration.
As a freshman at USC, Branch earned first-team All-American honors as a punt returner, announcing himself as one of college football’s most explosive playmakers. His production only grew from there. In his lone season with the Bulldogs, he led the entire SEC with 81 receptions — a total that demonstrated not only his route-running ability and hands but also his durability and consistency as a primary target over the course of a full season. His performance at the NFL Scouting Combine further boosted his standing, where he ran a 4.35-second 40-yard dash, a figure that confirmed the game-breaking speed scouts had identified throughout his college career.
