Actor, musician, and film producer Patrick Muldoon, best known for playing Zander Barcalow on the 1997 sci-fi action movie Starship Troopers, died of a sudden heart attack on April 19, according to Deadline. He was 57.
Patrick Muldoon, who was lovingly called “Bobo,” never married nor had children. He was, however, in a long-term relationship with former entertainment lawyer turned record producer Miriam Rothbart.
His other survivors include parents William Patrick Muldoon Sr and Deanna Muldoon, sister Shana Muldoon (also an actress-producer), brother-in-law Ahmet Zappa, niece Halo, and nephew Arrow.
Taking a closer look at Patrick Muldoon’s girlfriend
It remains unclear when and where Patrick Muldoon first met Miriam Rothbart. However, they have been together for several years and reportedly shared a home.
Rothbart launched his eponymous production house in 2018, which operates across New York City and Los Angeles. Currently, she is an executive producer on Eric Chang’s upcoming film, Only Child, starring Janan Stella and Stoya. The film’s website summarizes the plot as:
“A young woman’s mental state comes into question as she develops and experiences signs of repercussions befalling from a recent tragedy that eradicated her only child.”
As one of the ICA LA Board Members, Miriam co-founded a weekly assembly of curators and artists called Curator’s Council in March 2017, where they discuss food, fashion, film, art, culture, and more. It is led by the organization’s Curator, Jamillah James.
In an insider interview, Miriam Rothbart spoke of her inspiration behind the council.
“I was immediately attracted to the museum’s inclusive ethos and commitment to making contemporary exhibitions and programming relevant and available to a wide audience. In many ways, the Curator’s Council grew out of the desire to support and further this mission.”
Patrick Muldoon’s girlfriend continued:
“In addition to exploring non-traditional spaces and visiting an array of local artists, the Curator’s Council also serves as the lead underwriter of ICA LA’s Project Room and Courtyard exhibitions. These spaces showcase emerging and under-recognized creative talent.”
Rothbart spoke about the Project Room, which features works of several artists like Abigail DeVille, Patrick Martinez, and Rafa Esparza.
Speaking about what helped change her perspective about the art community, Patrick Muldoon’s longtime partner shared:
“Personally, visiting alternative, non-traditional art spaces has been the most eye-opening and transformative aspect of exploring the burgeoning scene here. Thinking outside the box is a big part of bringing emerging art to the public…”
Miriam Rothbart added that part of the Curator’s Council’s vision is to “participate in the exciting developments surrounding the city’s art scene in downtown and beyond” while also encouraging cross-dialogue among artists to help “build a creative and energizing spirit” for L.A.
The multi-faceted entrepreneur is also a member of the Board of Directors at the Institute of Contemporary Art, an art museum in downtown L.A. She is also the President of the Board of Trustees at the Performance Art Museum. The PAM helps in the advancement of “visibility, legacy, and scholarship of artists working in performance.”

Patrick Muldoon began his career as a model for Calvin Klein when he was signed with Wilhelmina Modeling Agency. Thereafter, he starred in various films and television programs, including Days of Our Lives. He even won a few Soap Opera Digest Awards and reprised his role as Austin Reed in 2011.
Over the years, he also produced (through storyboard Media) a few of his acting projects, including Arkansas, starring Vince Vaughn and Liam Hemsworth and The Comeback Trail, featuring Robert De Niro and Morgan Freeman, both released in 2020.
Elsewhere, as a singer-songwriter, Patrick Muldoon released an extended play in 2019 called Muldoon & Ives. He was also the lead vocalist and guitarist for The Sleeping Masses. Patrick was a martial arts expert with a blue belt in Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu.
In the aftermath of his demise, Muldoon’s loved ones remembered him as an “endlessly generous” man who:
“loved animals and people alike, gave unforgettable hugs, and possessed a rare quality of making others feel safe and seen. Stylish, charismatic, and full of life, he embraced each day with a full-tilt, rock ’n’ roll spirit.”
The family and friends also praised Patrick Muldoon’s sense of humor, poetry skills, and an “unmistakable presence.”
